Loginctl with second seat leads to crash of xorg/lightdm

Yesterday i tried to update manjaro. But after the Update the GUI won´t start any more. see: stable-update-2021-09-24. I do have btrfs and snapper, so i did a rollback. But i kept the defect snapshot, so i can look into it.

Then i tried my USB-stick with manjaro. When i booted from it, it did work flawlessly. Then i made the update to the stick. After that the stick will not boot into GUI any more. I can get into a console, but startx won´t work.

Did you check the journal after the GUI gained to load?

No, i did not check the journal. I checked only /var/log/Xorg.0.log

With GUI it is:
cat Xorg.0.log

With the update (II) LoadModule: “nouveau” is missing in the log. But lsmod did show nouveau

Tomorrow (:de:) i will be able to boot into the USB-Stick again. But i can´t post from within. :man_shrugging: So everything i should post, i have to write into files that i am able to post later then.

Is it possible to access the journal when mounting the USB-Stick in my functioning install ?

Are there any pacnew files after the update?

There are no pacnew files /etc/**/*.pacnew

Now i am on my laptop and the other pc is running with usb-stick and no GUI after update. So i am able to look for the journal. What especially do i search for ? …
While i was waiting for you, i decided to meanwhile change the keyboard-layout from qwerty to qwertz (to german). This did not succeed. The arch wiki said to reboot then. So i did reboot from the same USB-stick.

  • it did take a lot longer then last time
  • while the screen was black i tried ctrl-alt-F3 — nothing happend
  • after a long while lightdm with grafical login apeared
    :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
I will stay this way. Maybe the journal will give some info now on what happened …

This USB-Stick was created with ALMA. So there seems to be no permanent journal enabled to protect the stick. (journalctl -b -1 says there is no persistent journal found) …

I think my pc is playing games with me
I will save this journal -b for further use, and reboot. …

Again successfull reboot into GUI.

But i may be able to look into the journal of the normal installation, because i did leave the readonly snapshot accessible. …

I did reboot my pc. Even without update, i did not reach GUI. :frowning: This has happened before, but only in 1 of 10 boots.
At the moment i am comparing journal -b -0 with journal -b -1. And up to Line 1200 there is only sligth difference in the order of lines.

But then the functioning boot shows the first line with “nouveau” mentioned at line 1217. And in the boot without GUI this line is in 1478.

i did extract all lines with nouveau|login|light

boot with GUI
journalctl -b -0 | egrep -ni 'nouveau|login|light'

Does this help?:

  • Edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
  • Uncomment (remove the # from) the line logind-check-graphical and change its value to true if necessary
logind-check-graphical=true
  • Save and reboot
my existing lightdm.conf
cat lightdm.conf

Is it in the wrong section ? (maybe)
In what section should this be ?
But i will test and report.

At first the log seems better, because there are not so much failed attempts of lightdm. And the GUI did show.
But the fault-rate before may have been 1:10. So 1 succesfull boot is no proof :frowning:

only 1 fault

And if you look at line 1660, there is a failed attempt of lightdm, where it should not be

systemd[1]: lightdm.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE

I will keep reporting after more boots.
But i think the problem may lay deeper then at lightdm. Why ?

  • Because when there was a black screen, the logs of Xorg did show that even Xorg failed because it could not access nouveau.
  • When i got no GUI i could not start it manually with startx

I tried again to update my manjaro because i don´t want to be left back :sob:
When i boot after the update manjaro does not go into gui via lightdm. Bevore the update all was good.

I did install manjaro on a USB-Stick. This one does boot into GUI. (I am writing from this USB-Install now) But i am in a loss how to find the problem.

Right now i am trying to compare configs in /etc. But the biggest difference i know is, the USB works only singleseat. The PC was multiseat.

Differences i found:

with card 0 and card1
card1 seems to be not recognized

But what does that mean ?:

(EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.

Now i will try to restart from ssd

The problem of crashing xorg has gone, when i did:

  • loginctl flush-devices

Now i am able to boot into GUI :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

But in this process i lost my second seat :sob:

Other changes i made while analyzing to find the problem:

  • /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    • added nouveau to MODULES
    • added udev to HOOKS
    • sudo mkinitcpio -p linux514
cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf|egrep -v '#'
MODULES=(btrfs nouveau)
BINARIES=()
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base udev systemd autodetect modconf block keyboard sd-vconsole filesystems bootsplash-manjaro)
COMPRESSION="zstd"

Can anyone help me to get back to functioning loginctl for my second seat?

I did solve it (but don´t ask how long it took)

I changed /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

cat /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf | egrep -v '#'
cat /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf | egrep -v '#'

Now i do have multiseat again

In the last few years i did work without any xorg.conf. This leads to xorg using internal defaults. This worked very good. (mostly  )

I had thought it would now be necessary to create again a xorg.conf because of my problems. But it does work without

One problem remains

  • When the computer boots, the monitor at seat0 shows lightdm login and works flawless.
  • The monitor at seat1 stays dark. loginctl list-sessions says there is a lightdm at seat1 waiting for login  but the screen stays dark.
  • When the password for the user of seat1 is typed blindly into its keyboard (as if lightdm would have been visible), after the Enter key is pressed, the monitor of seat1 will suddenly show the desktop as if nothing has been wrong at all. :innocent:
