I have been using Debian distros for awhile and I find that I have become comfortable with it. However, I wanted to try an Arch based distro. Unfortunately, I’m stuck when booting into a live cd at ‘Reached Target Graphical Interface’. I have been crawling the internet trying to find a solution. I was hoping you guys can help.
Current setup:
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 I AORUS PRO Wifi (Rev. 1.0)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
GPU: Powercolor Liquid Devil RX 5700 XT *GB Graphics Card
Storage: Sabrent 2TB Rocket nvme PCIe 4.0 m.2
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Royal Series 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
What I have attempted so far:
Currently I have Pop!_os installed with CSM enabled with both UEFI on storage and PCI.
I have attempted these settings as well as legacy (prefer not to have legacy boot options).
I do have to set the parameter ‘nomodeset’ or I get a black screen
I have tried setting radeon.modeset = 0
I have tried replacing the ‘quiet’ with acpi_osi=! and acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=“Windows 2015” (and 2009)
I have tried alt + F2 sudo mhwd -a pci free (and nonfree) 0300
I’m out of ideas I can’t get this thing to boot. I have an Asus Zenbook s that it boots just fine on. I would pull the Drive and install Manjaro using the laptop then swapping it over. I just don’t know what that will do with the difference in hardware and that just ‘bandaids’ the issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

hello
you can save your profile for legacy in your Profile UEFI ,
and create one for linux
secure boot off
csm off ( be careful one is on cpu , other on boot )
all disks on AHCI
you don’t need to change something on boot ( live Iso USB )
also new version for iso is here
before insitalling
ALWAYS recheck options in UEFI
secure boot off
fast boot off
csm off
legacy off
drivers on AHCI ( not raid )
no optane RST
it easy to check before installing
inxi -Fxza
test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo efi || echo bios
sudo efibootmgr -v
sudo parted -l
if you get MBR instead of UEFI that you have not checked BEFORE installing
maybe try other DE , if there is trouble with kwin ( KDE ) for instance
Thank you for your reply. I double checked my settings in BIOS. Booting the live usb without -nomodeset’ results in no video output and with nomodeset results in the same issue.
csm = disabled
secureboot = disabled
drives = ACHI
Im on the latest version from manjaro.org
You think might be related to KDE?
Andreas85,
The Kernel is 5.15.6. I have done additional testing since my reply to stephane with different DE and distros.
Manjaro XFCE - Stuck at reached targert graphical interface.
Manjaro Gnome - Stuck at reached target graphical interface with the screen flickering.
Tried MX linux with KDE - booted fine
Tried Endevour OS - fails and references xorg-server 1.21.1.2 terminating with error code 1.
It seems that any Arch based distro I can not get a live usb to boot. All Debian based ones I can as long as I add nomodeset.
Is there a different setting that Arch doesn’t support that Debian might?
Also, as mentioned I do have a Zenbook S that I have manjaro on. I tried to put its M.2 Drive in my desktop and boot with Kernel 5.15.7. It would bring up the decryption prompt (LUKS?) but after decrypting the drive I get a black screen with no cursor.
Something about my desktop rig and Arch is not playing nice together. I just don’t know what that might be.
I did attempt to build my own iso. I keep getting a ==> Error: A failure occured in make_image_desktop( ). Aborting…
This seems to be going down another rabbit hole full of dead ends. It has to be graphics card related. When I booted the iso’s on my VM’s the ‘reached target graphical interface’ was the last thing to load before the GUI.
EDIT: I took a break from this and came back to it after the holiday. I was able to build an ISO with the updated kernel successfully. Apparently I stupidly forgot to reboot the VM after updating the kernel. After which I was able to create the iso. Unfortunately, that did not work.

If you think its graphics I guess you can try
amdgpu.modeset=0 radeon.modeset=0
Thank you for your reply. I did try that already
I was thinking with what I learned from Andrea85’s post I would see if AMD makes a driver for Arch low and behold they do not. They make on for SUSE, Ubuntu (Debian), and Redhat. But I don’t see one for Arch based distro’s and I think this might be the problem. Debian distro’s work fine.

amdgpu is the amd driver, is readily available, and your card has been supported for a while.
Above you have been blacklisting it along with just about every other module.
Why? Not sure, because we have no system information.

I do apologize about that. I’m new to the forums. I have added my system information in the question.
Thank you.

In your inxi above it shows you are using amdgpu fine.
As to manjaro … I wonder, given the hardware, which ISO you were using and what kernel it had.
The iso I am using is the latest (you can get it from the download page now.). The iso is called by default ‘manjaro-kde-21.2rc1-211211-linux515.iso’ if that helps at all. I am able to get to the tty when I get stuck at ‘Reached Target Graphical Interface’. When I run uname -r I got 5.15.6 in tty. I did the update and build iso trick Andreas85 recommended which brought the kernel up to 5.15.7 in Manjaro. As you can see currently with Pop!_os I’m on 5.15.8.
This weird issue seems to be with any Arch based distro I attempt. But Debian distros work fine as long as I include ‘nomodeset’. I’m not sure if there is much of a difference or what the difference would be to cause this with only Arch.
I received a different Motherboard (Back from RMA). Experiencing the same issues with Stephane’s settings in BIOS. Here is the new inxi config

The thing is i’m still getting stuck at the same point. I can run tty2 still and I’m no longer using the rc1 iso (looks like Manjaro updated their website with a newer one). Grabbed that hoping I could install it. No Luck. My gut is telling me its a compatibility with Arch and my GPU still.
there is many things on USB hub side
have you tried with only keyboard & mouse ?
also i use theses boot parameter
processor.max_cstate=5 rcu_nocbs=0_23 amd_iommu=on systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=true scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=1
