Lenovo Legion 7 - NVidia drivers not working properly with external display

Hi,

I’m new to this forum and Manjaro in general. I migrated a few days ago.
I’ve got a problem with a proper configuration of my graphics card.

Also, I use an external monitor (Eizo EV2360). Both of my displays are of 16:10 ratio.

I currently use open source drivers and I see no major problems using my laptop, but the performance sometimes could be better. Also, I’m unable to launch any game using lutris (I get an error message at startup informing that it is impossible to create a window).

My graphics card can be configured in BIOS in two modes: “Dynamic” and “Discrete”. Neither of these however work well with NVidia drivers.

In “Dynamic” mode only the built-in display works. My external screen is detected, but stays off and I can’t switch it on. An attempt to do so causes the screen to blink and return to the previous state immediately.

In “Discrete” mode both of the screens are on, but I can’t select resolution for my built-in display. There’s only one option: 2560x1600, which makes all the items way too small.

I’d like to use NVidia drivers to fully benefit from the power of my graphics card and continue using both of my displays.

As I said, I’m new to this forum. Can you tell me, what pieces of my system configuration I need to provide here?

Regards,
Alojzy

PS: I tried posting a picture of my “Hardware configuration” menu, but looks like I’m not allowed to post pictures here.

Welcome to the forum!

I suggest using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, then. See Configure NVIDIA (non-free) settings and load them on Startup - Manjaro

Hi @Yochanan

Thanks for the hints. As it’s getting quite late here, I’ll give it a go tomorrow.
For now I attach the result of running inxi on my machine.

you dont have installed the nvidia drivers, you are running on open source drivers, so install the proprietary ones via system settings/manjaro settings/hardware configuration and click on ‘auto install proprietary drivers’
or install them via command:
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300
reboot

you are also using wayland, so if you have still issues after installing the nvidia drivers, switch to xorg/x11

This guy describes installing arch: Lenovo Legion 7 (2021) and Arch Linux
No issues with the graphics, it seems.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.
Regarding nouveau - as I said, I tried using NVidia driver, but my external monitor didn’t work, so I used nouveau instead.
I’ve just switched to xorg, but my external display doesn’t work even with nouveau.

I re-run inxi with NVidia installed (and my external screen being detected, but failing to start):

Re the article about Arch: that’s what I’ve done. But I’ll double check, thanks for posting.

I’ve just found this post:

monitor-detected-but-black-screen/32391

(Sorry for formatting, but the forum says I can’t add links in my posts)

It’s a bit old, but it says:

The NVIDIA driver currently cannot be used as an output sink when the output source driver is xf86-video-amdgpu.

which makes sense in my case, as I use amdgpu. Do I need to follow the suggestion and use optimus-manager?

EDIT:

I’ve made some progress:

  • Switched my Graphics card in BIOS to “Discrete” mode.
  • Installed NVidia drivers.
  • After reboot both the built-in and the external displays work.
  • However, the built-in screen operates only in one resolution: 2560x1600, which makes everything too small.

xrandr:

HDMI-0 connected primary 1920x1200+2560+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 489mm x 298mm

   2560x1600 60.01*+ 165.02

I tried changing the resolution in nvidia-settings and it works, but everything comes back to 2560x1600 after a reboot, despite the fact I saved xorg.conf.

Any idea why does my system show only one resolution for the built-in display?

Can you post the output of:
mhwd -l && mhwd -li

In the post I linked above the bios settings are described as “GPU MUX Switch (Dedicated + Optimus Graphics)”.

This offered choice will need a decision before you install/setup the driver.

  • set to ‘dedicated’
  • run mhwd -l && mhwd -li and
  • install the offered nvidia (only) driver
  • or set to optimus/‘dynamic’
  • run mhwd -l && mhwd -li
  • install the offered video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime optimus driver

In both cases video-nvidia (nouveau) needs to be removed but that seems already have been done. I’m on an intel/nvidia optimus, in a ‘optimus-setup’ my mhwd -l && mhwd -li looks like this:

you should be able to change the scale from system settings, to 200% and see if it looks better

Thanks for the replay.
Yes, I tried that.
In my case I installed:

  • video-hybrid-amd-nvidia-prime in “dynamic” graphics mode
  • video-nvidia in “discrete” mode

In the first case I can use only one of my displays (either the one built-in or the external one; seems to be random, which one exactly). In the second case I can only use one resolution (2560x1600) on my built-in screen, which is too small to see things.

Here’s output for mhwd -l && mhwd -li executed in “dynamic” mode:

If you can’t see anything concerning, no worries. I think I’ll wait for the new major release of the most popular distros to see if they fix the problem with my card by any chance.

Hi, thanks for the hint.
I’ve tried that, but 200% looks even worse :).
I remember that Ubuntu allowed me to use 125% (fractional scaling), but then all the icons on the desktop disappeared.

Hi all,

FYI: I moved my problem to NVidia Dev forum and managed to find answers there.

Many thanks for all the hints. These helped me to move in the right direction.
