Laptop can't wake from suspend

Hi everyone, this is my first topic and i’m a n00b, sorry if I make any mistakes. I’ve been having this issue for a long time (tried every kernel from 5.10 to 5.19 current).

Basically, I can’t get my laptop to work after suspending it, whether it’s by closing the lid, automatically for power saving, through the terminal (systemctl suspend) or UI, it does the same thing. Screen is black, I press a key to wake it up and it lights up but that’s it, no matter what I do I’m stuck with a lit black screen, no cursor or anything. I’ve read many similar topics and couldn’t find a working solution, I can’t even get a tty to work with the combinations, all I can do is force shutdown with my power button.

This is a new ASUS vivobook x515 laptop but my old Asus s510 also had almost the same issue (tty would work) so I had to disable suspend all together but that isn’t really an option anymore. BTW this also happens with Fedora 36 (Gnome).

Hibernation works, it’s just very inconvenient). Any help is appreciated.

did you tested it in live usb if it worked?
did you make the same modifications on fedora and manjaro that could cause it?
are you dual booting with windows? if yes, is fast startup disabled?

  1. I thought about it but ended up not doing it because It had just happened a few times and didn’t want to force shutdown again just in case. I’ll try if you’d like me to.

  2. No, because the first thing I did after installing manjaro clean was test the suspend function and it did the same thing.

  3. I am dual booting with windows, fast startup is disabled. Suspend works just fine on w10.

force shutdown in live usb is not really that troublesome … its troublesome on an installed system, because of a potential to damage the hard disk … so go give it a try in the live usb
and does the freeze happens everytime you wake from suspend?

Just tried it in the live usb and suspend worked fine there. Screen went black, hit a key, it lit up and after a second the log in screen appeared. Tried it twice, both times withouth issue.

Yes, it seemed to happen every time. Must have tried around 15 times in both Fedora and Manjaro.

so it works in live usb… the only thing that is different between live usb and installation is the disk…
we need logs, so suspend, wake up, force shutdown, boot again, and provide logs:
journalctl -b-1 -p5 --no-pager

so lets do some testing, remove the battery first and then disable wifi power save funciton-create this file:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/wifi.conf
and inside it put this line:
options iwlwifi power_save=0
save it with ctrl+x
then run:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
reboot
now with removed battery and disabled power save on wifi, test suspending and if it still freezes, force shut down and check logs:
journalctl -b-1 --no-pager
scroll there and copy the logs that start after this line:

The battery is non-removable so I can’t do much about that.
EDIT: To clarify, I did run create the file, added the line and ran the command then reboot before this and it did still freeze. Tried ctrl-alt-f1…f2…fn and nothing.

1.what is the difference between live usb and install? maybe something related to network? were you connected to internet in live usb?
2.provide output from:
cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
3.go to bios and check there for sleep state related options/settings, go through each setting in bios …

I wasn’t connected to the internet in live usb, no.

Went through all the BIOS options and the only things remotely related were fastboot and secureboot which are both disabled. By this point I’d think is this computers problem but given that my last one did the same thing, I doubt it. Plus there are several unsolved threads with the same issues.

so disable wifi (if thats what you are using) and test…
were you using the same iso for this install as for the previous computer?
the power savings should be under acpi settings/options in bios if you have those there

I doubt it was the exact same ISOs because the installs are about a year apart but it was both the XFCE latest available version. Doubt the DE is causing this since Fedora uses Gnome.

No ACPI settings in bios.

try with this parameter:
open this file:
etc/default/grub
and edit this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT - inside the quotes add this parameter:
mem_sleep_default=deep
dont remove anything from there, just add it to existing one, save the file and update grub:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test
