Laggy Xorg functions + High Xorg CPU Usage with DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.2.1

Ever since the last round of updates I have had an Xorg process that habitually takes up approx. 30% of the cpu. This is accompanied by a laggy GUI. Software tends jitter and the mouse stops every other second. This only affects X (i.e sound is fine). Here is an output of an Xorg log session:

and here is a screengrab of the process with the GUI top output.

Please inform me of any required details and how to execute such information grabs and they will be ameliorated posthaste. I am in an unusable state and not sure what to do next. I have mhwd -i xf86-video-nvidia, mhwd -i xf86-video-nouveau'd. I have seeped into a sphere of inseccent seccasion.

I bow to your inevitable wisdom.

Hello,

From where did you get those commands?
Please see here how to provide good information about your hardware and system:

Hello @bogdancovaciu

From where did you get those commands?

So, I did a search on mhwd for drivers, and I received a couple of hits. I then installed all display drivers in turn. There was xf86-video-vesa, xf86-video-modesetting. It was a cornucopia of drivers. I tried all 16 combinations of those installations to see if anything would work. Of course, I also tried reinstalling Xorg via sudo pacman -S Xorg and installing the whole group. I installed the linux-latest-drivers package

Did you, perhaps, have any suggestions as to troubleshooting this issue? I am dumping everything suggested in the link you provided as per your request, with a dmsg log, a journalctl log, part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4 of the manjaro-logs-helper log (it was too big to fit in one file practically).

Apologies for the deluge, but you did not cite what messages you needed specifically to help solve the problem. Hopefully one of these logs assists you assisting me. Please let me know if you need more information.

You are mixing packages that get installed by pamac or pacman commands with what mhwd does. Is not the same.
mhwd -l
will show you what drivers are available for your system

mhwd -li
wil show what drivers you installed via mhwd script

If you have an Nvidia GPU and want to use the proprietary driver then run:
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

If you want to use the nouveau drivers for it then you run:
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

Is all documented in the wiki Configure Graphics Cards - Manjaro

For intel and AMD gpus you run the same command.
sudo mhwd -a pci free 0300

If you require for some reason (still don’t know what your hardware is, as you did not share it) the xf86-video-nouveau package, then you install that one via pacman or pamac.
pamac install xf86-video-nouveau

doesn’t exist, it never existed not as mhwd inclusion, nor as package …

How did you do that exactly because such package doesn’t exist?
Maybe you refer to the linux-latest metapackage, but that is strict to the kernel.

My apologies. I forgot to inform you that I have tried installing the free/nonfree drivers in the way you mentioned. No change was seen in the tasks that were running, nor in the lag that really does make this system quite unusable.

p.s. as per your quotes, they are reffering to typos. Again, apologies. Indeed, there is no xf86-video-nvidia. This was meant to be video-nvidia. As for the second quote, there is no justice in the world, but I installed linux-latest-nvidia and X would not start. I had to remove this package to start X again. It’s been a journey.

Is there any other information that you need to assist me? Could you notify me if you have any inkling as to a solution?

Edit: This is the output from mhwd -li

Does this help? What would that usb warning be about?

You are on a Desktop PC with a GeForce GTX 1650.
No need to install metapackages. Also you don’t have to install all drivers.

Run this commands to remove the unnecessary ones:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -r pci video-modesetting

And to make sure you have the proper config and set the modules to load for your Nvidia GPU, run:
sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-nvidia
then
sudo mhwd-gpu --setmod nvidia --setxorg /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf
then reboot the system
systemctl reboot

I suggest to switch to 5.10 kernel once you reboot. To install it run:
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux510

That will also install the correct nvidia modules package … Reboot again.

In the running of the commands you have mentioned, at the command sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-nvidia, I have received the error message in the output:

Will this be an issue for all my cuda programs? How do i navigate this error while keeping cuda? Is this possible?

Thank you so much for your help so far @bogdancovaciu

Remove CUDA first then.
pamac uninstall cuda
then try again

In principle you should be safe just removing the unnecessary drivers and run this command

but because is unsure you have a proper config, the force command to reinstall video-nvidia seemed to be a good idea.

Hello @bogdancovaciu

Thank you for your kind suggestions. Unfortunately, having run everything you have suggested successfully, I am still left with the same problem. I wonder, is there any other logs that might assist you? I am happy to provide whatever is needed. I am really trying to fix this issue

p.s. this is a completely new install of Manjaro. I installed it on this machine yesterday. Does this help?

can you provide

inxi -Fza
sudo journalctl -b0 | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

You installed two display managers … As per logs, i’ll leave others to read them and take care of this further.
Cheers!

Thank you @bogdancovaciu, you have assisted greatly. @stephane et al, is how would I ameliorate this situation? Would the removing of one of these display managers solve my problem? How would I go about doing this?

you will have after with time update bios motherboard

what have you done exactly to get gdm and lightdm ?
have installed gnome and added Xfce ?

The problem has magically dissapeared! I removed LightDM, rebooted exactly 4 times and there was no change. Then, left the computer for a day. I came back just now, expecting the same issue but, I booted up and it was fine. The issue is just gone. No trace of it. This exact same thing has happened to me on two separate occasions with Manjaro. There is some Xorg/Xorg related process that engages a large amount of CPU, no attempt to solve the problem works, then, after a couple of days, the problem magically disappears. I’m very confused, somewhat happy, but I would also like to know what happened.

@stephane thanks for the link. Couldn’t hurt to update the BIOS. As for the gdm/LightDM issue, I’m not sure. I definitely did not touch Xfce. This Manjaro install is very new and so the only changes to it from scratch are software installations and driver install/re-installs to ameliorate this issue. Is there any way to find out?
