This a.m. update to firefox causes hard crashes computer, i.e. screen goes haywire, subsequently goes blank, hardware reboot required to restart.
I have deprecated firefox and returned to pale moon.

Rather than providing the commercial reference of a computer or piece of hardware, it is usually better to directly ask the system to describe itself. On top of saving time to everyone, this also often provides more details, including something specific to the running system.
Below is a (not exhaustive) list of commands for retrieving system information.
If you don’t know how to use those commands, see: [HowTo] Use the terminal / TTY
Remember to use preformatt…

Strong of its many members, the Manjaro support forum can provide you help whenever you have an issue with your Manjaro installation. But in order to work efficiently, we shall also ask you to follow a few major points.
Provide context
Simply signaling an issue is rarely enough to understand how it occurred. It is thus important to provide details on how it happened:
Detail prior actions leading to the issue.
Provide any related error messages.

BTW a nealy identical system with and amd processor runs firefox-99 w/o problems

I think this system is in dire need of a kernel upgrade. Kernel 5.13 has been EOL for a while.
Upgraded kernel to latest LTS , (re)installed firefox, same result.

Did you try refresh or start Firefox without plugins?
BTW: This is a ‘rescue’ computer from MicroBee refurbished (2018), an old Dell Optiplex 990 Tower being used as a support (sidekick) system with new NIC and USB audio. It has worked fine with prior firefox versions and before that with pale moon.

You can install various FF versions. There is for example firefox-appmenu-bin in AUR, however, it’s still on 98 version. You can compile a newer version yourself (firefox-appmenu), but it’s a pain, because compilation can last up to 24 hours, depends on your computer. It’s hard to make the compilation succeed.
Or… you can switch to firefox from snap or flatpack.
This is the beauty of Arch based systems, there are a lot of options and it gives you freedom.
$ firefox --safe-mode
ATTENTION: default value of option mesa_glthread overridden by environment.
works, no crashes ? (so far)
Disabled extension “Tab Reloader (page auto-refresh)”
Problem solved.
UPDATE: Not solved, only delayed

After running unattended for a half hour or so, Fail again
Too much trouble, deprecating firefox, returning to pale moon
Thanx, pale moon is more than adequate for this simple use.
Firefox has always been squirrely on this system.
While I have no idea if it will fix your problem, what else you could try is to create a new, clean Firefox profile. Maybe the profile you used before has been irrevocably corrupted for some unknown reason.

You could try to start Firefox in safe mode, and click the “Refresh Firefox” option, it will reset all Firefox defaults, remove all extensions/themes/customization, but will keep bookmarks, and saved credentials. You then just need to reconfigure Firefox to your liking, reinstall extensions/themes, and you’re good to go. From terminal execute the following firefox --safe-mode
and click Refresh button.
Running in safe-mode only delays the crash.
Refresh and firefox still crashes the computer.
The only solution is to deprecate firefox and move to pale ale.
Since firefox works on my other systems, it possibly is the combination of firefox/video-linux/intel cpu.
maybe try librewolf-bin
from AUR - fork of firefox - and see if it crashes…
Thanks for the suggestion… … … .
I am giving up on firefox. It replaced pale moon some months ago to get past delayed updates from Manjaro plus also stumbling on restoring multiple website windows at boot.
BTW I am seriously considering deprecating firefox on my main Linux workstation where it has been the primary browser. Mozilla has ‘improved’ it to the point it is certainly aggravating, and nearly useless. I am considering Opera. Chromium, Chrome, pale moon, and Vivaldi are otherwise in use with other tasks.
Sad because I have used Mozilla for over fifteen years.
c’est la vie
Your crashes let think of a hardware issue like overheat.
Is the computer dust clean ?
You say it’s refurbished, is the thermal paste correctly applied ?
You didn’t show your add-ons :
grep -oP '},"name":"\K[^"]+' ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.*default*/addons.json
Only crashes while running firefox 99.
Fails in safe-mode and with the only addon disabled.
Runs the same set of 5 web pages over 4 screens w/o problems w/pale moon.
Hardware boots Windows 10 w/o problems.
