FAILED entries during boot after the full upgrade - system was not booted for over 3 months

Hello,

I have just done a successful full upgrade of Manjaro on an old Mac Book Pro (from 2009) and after I restarted the machine, I have got this:

I am not sure where how I could start any recovery. It seems GRUB proceeds as normal but then the system fails to run. What would you suggest to start working on it?

Thanks

can you start

sudo systemctl enable haveged.service
sudo systemctl start haveged.service

As far as I’m aware, Manjaro is not supported on a Mac of that vintage. There is a list somewhere, showing which models might be supported. I’ll post it below if I find it in a reasonable time.

Cheers.

It freezes at some point and becomes unresponsive. I tried to switch to other TTY, via CTR + ALT + F2, but the machine does not respond to anything.

Well, it was working quite all right before the last upgrade for a couple of years. It was very slow, and I’d probably have to a change disk to something faster, but once it booted I could at least do a few useful things.

Perhaps you refer to the latest upgrade. I expect I will have to say “goodbye” at some point :slight_smile:

I believe this is what you’re referring to:

Indeed, that’s the very list.

@FranekW

If the OP’s model is one of those supported models on the list, that makes all the difference.

Please provide outputs of the following commands:

System information:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Logs:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --catalog --no-pager

The resulting information should be useful to those willing to help.

You will likely need to boot with the Manjaro Installer DVD/ISO/USB and use the terminal from the Live environment to enter a chroot environment.

Manjaro’s tool to enter chroot is a simple command:

manjaro-chroot -a

From there you can access your machine (terminal mode only) with root privileges, and perform any required actions.

Edit:- Please make sure to use the </> button when posting command output, and place the pasted text between the two rows of backtick characters. like so:

```
Paste text here
```

Please refrain from posting more screenshots of text.

Pipe the command output to a text file, if you need to, or send it to a pastebin service, or similar.

As an infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit. To that end, the following links will be invaluable:

Cheers.

I did manage to boot into LIVE image and use chroot. Here are requested outputs. Once I invoked chroot and root into the local system, the inxi didn’t seem to give me much information about a system a computer, so I provided an additional output when inxi was invoked on a LIVE image

I have also a an output from dmesg if it’s important. I didn’t included it because I am not sure if I would share personal info.

thanks

  • Is your previous boot really from July, or am I misunderstanding something?
  • The standard Manjaro chroot command is manjaro-chroot -a
    • This will automatically mount a few other things that will allow inxi to produce more meaningful results.
  • Was your system up-to-date before this most recent update?
    • The reason I ask is that some people reported similar problems back in July, in at least one case related to systemd dropping support for cgroup v1.

Indeed.

@FranekW – Apologies for not proof reading my post; it should read as follows (now updated):

Indeed, I have not been using this comp for a while. So, it was very much out-of-date at the time I tried to upgrade the system. Next boots are exactly what you can see on a screenshot: the system reports multiple failures.

I was trying to find something before I would post here but I couldn’t find anything that would help. I’m going to check the links you provided and if I still have an issue, then I come back with proper logs.

BTW, thanks for point at manjaro-chroot -a. I didn’t realise there is such command for this.

This info important info should be in your Topic… if you don’t want to use your computer for a long time or refuse to upgrade for several month, then Manjaro isn’t the right Distro for you.

You may have a better experience with a Debian Distro like Mint for example.

I tried to follow the links, did a full update again with re-installing GRUB from scratch however with no success. I decided to reinstall the system.

Thanks for your help
