Experiencing Random Shutdowns

Hi,

So recently I’ve been experiencing random shutdowns. This is an issue that has started recently (within the last couple of days). I am not sure what is causing the shutdowns, hence my post here. What happens is that I’ll be playing a game through Steam and the computer will just entirely shut off, causing me to have to turn it on again. This has happened while playing Yakuza: Like A Dragon, and Deep Rock Galactic (using a Dualsense controller - both through wired and bluetooth connections - if that’s relevant; the other games were played with a Switch Pro Controller). It is possible that this is an overheating issue but I’m sceptical for a few reasons. Firstly: it only seems to happen shortly after waking from sleep - I have rebooted and had multi-hour long play sessions with zero issue. If overheating was the issue I’d expect more occurrences while doing that. Secondly: I have played similarly taxing games - Elden Ring, and Yakuza 6 - with zero issue in this regard. If it is an overheating issue however, I’m not sure how I would diagnose this. I have installed psensor but it doesn’t seem to maintain its tracking between boots.

Any help would be appreciated - like I said, I don’t think it’s an overheating issue but it could be and I don’t want to entirely discount the possibility

If it is provoked by the system, you should find some logs.

If there’s nothing, it may be a hardware (managed) issue, like the motherboard itself shutting down or a failing PSU.

Hello,

I would start with the BIOS update.

There is the new one 2022/04/29
https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b550-f-gaming-model/helpdesk_bios/

I would add in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf

    Option "ConnectToAcpid" "Off"

to the Section "Device"

make sure only one server is running. Install manjaro-pulse if you want to continue using pulseaudio, install manjaro-pipewire if you want to use pipewire …

Personally i avoid swap partitions on SSD/NVME and rather go with a swapfile or use zram-generator
Other than that i don’t see any reason to have issues, unless the PSU is not enough in some load tasks as mentioned above.
