Disk access freezes every 20 minutes

I have a strange issue with file access, both local and shared that happens on an interval, every HH:00, HH:20 and HH:40. During these hours and for 1-5 seconds, access to any disk halts. For example, I am trying to save a file from Firefox, and the folder dialog freezes, or while watching a video from any disk, the video pauses and resumes after few secs.

Also, and this is strange, the problem disappeared for few days, and re-appeared probably after an update (not the latest).

It happens to HDD, SSD, M.2 and Samba driver, so I don’t think it is hardware related.
Also, it was happening to my Intel Platform, with Manjaro version 19.xx and Kernel 5.8
It disappeared once I moved to AMD, but re-appeared after some time.

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.21.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.82.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.12.2-1-MANJARO
OS Type: 64-bit
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 24 Ă— AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor
Memory: 62.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Radeon RX 5500 XT

Tried to have htop open while this is happening, but didn’t show anything suspicious.
No user tasks are running, just the Timeshift and that once per day, not every 20mins.
Also “journalctl -r” didn’t show anything either.

Any ideas where else to look? Logs? Scheduled tasks? Background services?

:+1: Welcome back to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.
  3. The output to sudo smartctl --all /dev/xxx where xxx is all of your HDD, SSD and M2 (one per line) would be helpful as well.

Do you see the problem when running another kernel?

  1. As you have 5.12 installed, have you tried 5.10 LTS (Long Term Support) or even 5.4 LTS? (which @freggel.doe seems to agree with)
  2. You seem to have a RAID1 active. Can I have the dmraid config too, please?
  3. You seem to have CIFS active: Can I have the mount command for that too? (Feeling like the proverbial madman asking more questions than 7 wise men can answer now)
  4. Do you have multiple ESPs? (You seem to have a dual boot with Windows). Yes/No is fine…
  5. sda:
    • There is a large discrepancy between the Power-Off_Retract_Count and the Power_Cycle_Count:
Have you pressed the power button for more than 5 seconds for 400+ times??? :scream:
    • There was a major error 6 hours into the operation of the disk, but looking at your rig, I’m going to disregard that and say you built it yourself and that was a fluke as it never happened again afterwards.
  6. sdb:
    • Same observation as sda except the error.
  7. sdc:
    • Still in good condition even though it seems to have been inherited from an older system.
    • POR_Recovery_Count: 539 sudden power losses: That’s not good! What happened?
  8. sdd:
    • POR_Recovery_Count: 144!
  9. nvme0n1: OK, nothing to report
  10. nvme1n1: It’s running a bit hot: is the Gammix physically underneath the 970 EVO 500G?
  11. nvme2n1: Also a bit hot, but no worries.

P.S. :sunglasses: rig! :+1:
P.P.S. Travelling now will not be able to have a look at this again (probably) today…

Yes, this problem exists for a year now, with older Kernels and even different mobo/cpu. Few of the disk were the same though.

  1. As I wrote above, yes it happens with older Kernels. Maybe when it stopped for a while, it was with a certain version, but didn’t take a note of that.
  2. Not sure how to find the config. dmraid -s returns “no raid disks”. mdadm.conf has some info but everything is commented out…
  3. In my fstab file:
//192.168.1.xxx/Wizzy/Desktop                /home/username/Desktop      cifs   rw,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/username/.myuserpass,x-systemd.automount   0 0

  1. No
5/6. sda & sdb are part of the RAID1 (/dev/md127). I was using both with a Dell Perc 6i on a RAID5 (with two more disks) but since I moved all my data to a NAS, I am using them as temp local storage for Video Editing.
7/10. sdc & nvme1n1 are bothe passed through in a Windows VM, with QEMU/VFIO. It is very rare to have to force shutdown Windows. I am not sure if the VMM is sending some wrong signals
  2. This is a btrfs partition for Timeshift. It has another one, but I am not using it at all for now
  3. Boot, swap, root, home disk
  4. It is under my desktop VGA.
  5. This one is rarely used, just when I need high perf for certain operations

ps. thank you
ps. where to? There are lockdowns everywhere! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm, so likely one(or more) of those is(are) responsible.

Some of them don’t seem to be used all the time (for all workflows) - maybe start pulling “groups” you do not need (temporarily) and see if this improves the situation.

So it’s none of that…

Let’s see what’s scheduled:

ls /etc/cron.d

:warning: If that’s not it either, we’ll indeed have to go @freggel.doe 's system of pulling all drives except boot and then plugging them back in one by one to see which one is causing the issue… :scream:

0hourly timeshift-hourly

Hard to start removing disks… This is my remote-working machine…

Wild thought after seeing this: Perhaps there are energy saving settings for the rotational disks at play.

Just an update:
With the latest updates, that I installed two days ago and maybe the 5.12.9-1 Kernel, the problem disappeared. Therefore it is software related and not hardware.
Till the next update
