Dell Inspiron 5720 works with kernel 5.13 only

I am trying to use an old (2013) laptop I have: it is a Dell Inspiron 5720 with Intel® Centrino® Wireless 2230 device.

I tried with the following ISO
manjaro-kde-21.1.6-211017-linux513.iso
and all is fine up to the moment of updating the system to the latest rolling release where I get so many errors that I cannot count (all referred to PGP)
It seems because the kernel 5.13 was no more supported in the following versions
I also tried to downgrade to kernel 5.10 but the whole networking part is no more recongnized

I also tried kernel 5.15 and no way of have the networking (both LAN and wifi) working (not even recognized by the OS)

How can I find which kernel is able to support that same component that seemed to be recognized only by kernel 5.13 ???

Any help is more than welcome

Try to install manjaro-kde-22.1.0-230421-linux61.iso

By look at the journal or kernel messages and investigate what the module reports.

Since it is an old hardware I bet it is no more supported on 6.1, but I will try it

Please post your system info as outlined here:

e[1me[31mWarning: e[mNo installed USB configs!

I know about it that is why I was surprised to have it perfectly working with version 21 kernel 5.13

The mhwd is quite different if you noticed

5.13 has been EOL (End Of Life) for well over a year.

You still have other supported kernels to try as well as checking the forum search results I linked above.

  • 4.19 LTS (Long Term Support)
  • 5.4 LTS
  • 5.10 LTS
  • 6.2 stable
  • 6.3 stable

Tomorrow I will go thru the search list you suggested but so far only the version with 5.13 is able to recognize, without any intervention, that chip

Quite weird 5.10 and 5.15 are not able to

have the same setup as yours (except being a 15" - 5520), have no issues whatsoever with all hardware working. install using a latest ISO. should not be a issue. i’m on 5.15 and have tried 6.1 with no issues

As far as I know you dont have the BCM43142, but a tiny different model

If I am wrong then there is something very strange I am not getting

Sofar I think I have tried almsot all comibineation of 5.10, 5.15, 6.1 versions and the only that allows the wireless working is just 5.13 (Manajaro 21 Pahvo) and by the way none of them recognize the etherenet so the LAN device

So much weird!!!

oops, i thought you said you had Intel® Centrino® Wireless 2230 which i have, which has no issues, even among other intel wireless cards, it is one of the best supported.

broadcom chipsets however, are can of worms in linux.

The commercial name is Centrino etc but the truth is it is a BCM43142 :frowning:

you can try this though, you can download a broadcom wireless drivers from a manjaro repo (drivers for all LTS kernels and latest main-line kernels are available). see;
https://packages.manjaro.org/?query=broadcom-wl

so select the relevant package for the kernel of your choice and locate the file in;
https://repo.ialab.dsu.edu/manjaro/stable/extra/x86_64/
download it (*.zst). move file into the laptop and install using

$ sudo pacman -U /path/to/*-broadcom-wl-*.pkg.tar.zst

I just prepared a new USB from the latest ISO:

sudo dd if=./manjaro-kde-22.1.0-230421-linux61.iso of=/dev/sdc status=progress oflag=sync bs=128M

then I downloaded the package on my Manjaro desktop

sudo pacman -Sw linux61-broadcom-wl

then I copied into an USB drive to install it on the notebook

sudo pacman -U ./linux61-broadcom-wl

this is the result for inxi -v7azy

Neither the ethernet or the wireless are working: now I am trying to undersand which chipset is the ethernet

alright some more investigation is due;
seems like kernel modules are not loaded;

run;

$ grep blacklist /etc/modprobe.d/*

if you get results;

blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist bcma

you will have to remove those lines from files within /etc/modprobe.d/* and reboot

I will test it as soon as my last attempt ends…
…30 more minutes

In my last attempt i got to a point similar to kernel 5.13

I started with creating an image of the last version but with kernel 5.15 (had to look for it in sourceforgenet since it was not available on the main site !!!)

  sudo dd if=./manjaro-kde-22.1.0-minimal-230421-linux515.iso of=/dev/sdc status=progress oflag=sync bs=128M

After that the wifi was perfectly installed by default (no way of installing the ethernet card for now)
I could update all the packages and so far all i working great

The weird thing is that if I grep the modprobe as you suggested I keep seeing the following:

grep blacklist /etc/modprobe.d/*                                                               ✔️
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ssb
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist brcm80211
blacklist brcmfmac
blacklist brcmsmac
blacklist bcma

Why is it working anyway ?
