Cannot play video from smb in Dolphin

This is relevant to the one I posted before: Building ffmpeg-git, target not found: intel-graphics-compiler-bin

In that post, I thought it was a problem of mpv and the ffmpeg version it’s bundled with. Thanks to the help from @Darksky , I had managed to build the right mpv version. But I still cannot play video from smb in Dolphin. Then I tried Nautilus, which uses gvfs rather than KDE’s kio, everything works fine, even with the out-of-box mpv version from Manjaro ARM official repo.

I have installed kio-fuse and rebooted, but I still cannot play video from smb in Dolphin. The discussion in VLC / SMB - Watching videos via network-computer pointed out this is a KDE problem, and in VLC / SMB - Watching videos via network-computer - #33 by Yochanan maybe manjaro-settings-samba is recommended, but it’s not available on aarch64. Again not an urgent problem and further investigation is out of the scope of my knowledge, just want to report it here.

manjaro-settings-samba is in the extra repo…
Try installing it with sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-settings-samba

Thanks, I have successfully installed manjaro-settings-samba. Also other packages as stated in Using Samba in your File Manager - Manjaro and rebooted. But the problem is still there.

One last idea, is that it could be a permissions issue.

Do you get any errors when trying to access the network file?

I can open other file type e.g. text files, with kate text editor.

but the question was not what you can do
it was whether you get errors when you try to do what you currently can’t do …

You are right semantically, I should print the errors.

That’s the log from SSH.

We need the log from your video player when it tries to play the file.

Have you tried mounting the remote folder and playing the video’s from there?

That is how I would guess this should work - a mounted share is accessible regardless of how it was integrated into the filesystem, through which means or protocol it was mounted, it should behave like any other directory/file
… it should

there should be no need to play the video through smb - just play the file through it’s path

@NGr @Nachlese I’ll try it. But as I stated at the begining of the post, I can open the video in Gnome Nautilus and play normal. So if I simply do it from terminal, it’s likely everything will work. The problem in the KDE cannot be pinpointed through terminal, am I right?

… probably not
to be honest:
I didn’t understand what you meant to say with what you said …

Once you mount it to e.g. /media/videos then you can use Dolphin to navigate to it.

I mouted it to /mnt/some_dir_name and I can open the video in Dolphin. Thanks for the heads up.

@Nachlese So now I can open video by mounting the smb drive in Dolphin. And I can open video in Nautilus using their out-of-box smb function. The initial problem is I cannot open video in Dolphin using its out-of-box smb (neither by right clicking Remote in the side bar and choosing Add Entry to add the smb drive into sidebar, nor by clicking Network and navigating to the smb drive), which is still the case.

I have no idea (how Dolphin behaves).
It probably uses the smb:// location and tries to play through that
But it should also be able to mount that share to some place
and then you could go through that path.

I don’t have KDE running - I don’t have Dolphin running nor did I ever use it.
KDE … has too many tunable options for my taste and it’s hard to understand how they do what they do …
They try to be helpful - but may sometimes get in your way …
