Bluetooth Headset profile switches from "HSP/HFP" to "off" after ending a call

I’m using my JLab Play bluetooth headset on a HP Pavilion 23 with Manjaro 20.2.1 and KDE Plasma 5.20.5.

When connecting the headset via bluetooth the A2DP profile is used automatically. Therefore my headset mic isn’t used on Discord voice-chat. I have to manually switch it to HSP/HFP in the advanced audio settings. Looking for a way to make HSP/HFP the default profile, I came about the Bluetooth Headset topic in the ArchLinux Wiki, the link I can not post here aparently, where it say:

“For enabling automatic profile switching from A2DP to HSP when a recording stream appears without any role set, you can append ‘auto_switch=2’ to ‘load-module module-bluetooth-policy’ in ‘/etc/pulse/default.pa’.”

I found this an adquate solution, so I tried it and it worked at first but after ending the call in Discord the profile is automatically changed to off and joining another call won’t switch it to HSP/HFP again.

I wonder if this is some kind of bug, or if I made a mistake or have to set some other options. Can someone please explain or help?

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

  3. Please read this:
    [HowTo] post screenshots and links

  4. Can you provide the output to:

    pacmd dump

    as well?

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel you have, …

Hi, thanks for the welcome and your supportive response. I’m rather new to manjaro and online forums like this, so your patience is highly appreciated. I guess, I could have read more into the beginner advice around here. I will have a look for it, while reading your recommendations and filling my profile. I’m also sorry for my late response. I thought I would receive some form of e-mail notification about a response to my question, but this did not happen. Guess I need to ask for it in the settings somewhere.

However, this is my inxi output:

The link, I meant to present here, was this one: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bluetooth_headset#Switch_between_HSP/HFP_and_A2DP_setting

Thanks for helping me out :slightly_smiling_face:

@nikgnomic I don’t understand half of what’s going on here… :fearful:
Could you have a look, please?

:+1:

Bluetooth headset - ArchWiki
Archwiki suggests setting the card-profile to HSP/HFP using the card number, but the number is very likely to change for a bluetooth device so it would be better to use the card name

But your PulseAudio data is not showing any bluetooth card or profile
Please connect the bluetooth device and use this command

pactl list sinks short

The name should look something like - bluez_card.0A_5C_21_F1_FE_01
(but the hex numbers might be different if they are not based on the chip ID and class ID)

Hi, thanks for joining in

This is my pactl output:

0 alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo module-alsa-card.c s16le 2ch 44100Hz SUSPENDED
1 bluez_sink.FC_88_77_09_52_A6.a2dp_sink module-bluez5-device.c s16le 2ch 44100Hz SUSPENDED

So, the second one bluez_sink.FC_88_77_09_52_A6 should be my headset.

What’s next?

I posted the wrong command - it should have been pactl list cards short
but I can adapt from the sink name

Use this command to set the profile to A2DP instead of Off

pacmd set-card-profile bluez_card.FC_88_77_09_52_A6 a2dp_sink

Well, this did not really work out… I will try to describe exactly what I did and observed: I turned on the headphones, they connected automatically and got the a2dp-profile set. I looked it up in the advanced audio settings GUI. Then I joined a discord voice chat and the profile switched to hsp-profile. So far the auto-switch=2-statement in my /etc/pulse/default.pa somehow worked. In fact it seemed to switch multiple times, as I heard the joining sound a couple of times and also saw a pop-up on my screen switching between a (sound?)-card-symbol, and a headphones-symbol. I get this pop-up always when connecting my headphones and the audio switches from build-in speakers to my headphones’ speakers, but usually just once and not switching back and forth a couple of times.
However, in the end it worked out, the hsp-profile was set and I could use my headset-mic. So I ended the call and the headset’s profile in the advanced audio settings GUI was set to ‘off’, just as I described in the beginning of this thread. So I used:
pacmd set-card-profile bluez_card.FC_88_77_09_52_A6 a2dp_sink
, which gave me this output:
Failed to set card profile to 'a2dp_sink'.
The headset is still connected, as
pactl list cards short
shows:

0 alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 module-alsa-card.c
3 bluez_card.FC_88_77_09_52_A6 module-bluez5-device.c

My journalctl output for this whole process shows this:

If I switch profile to a2dp in GUI also nothing happens. I can switch it there manually back to hsp with full functionality but setting it to a2dp in the GUI again afterwards, sets it straight back to ‘off’.

Hi, do you have any suggestions on this? I’m pretty lost here. Any Advice would be highly appreciated. Or would you recommend another forum for this problem?
