Blank display at login nvidia 1650 driver 570

Hello again,

I am running XFCE on a laptop with 2 external monitors.
Not so long ago, a XFCE update broke the profiles I have set up for my display configuration.
XFCE Display Profile Detection - Support / Xfce - Manjaro Linux Forum

After the latest update, I login to a blank screen with just the mouse cursor.
No windows/menus are displayed.
However, it seems that the system is operational.
Using Guake or my keyboard shortcut to launch Terminator work since I can type sudo reboot or xfce4-session-logout

I tried to login with a system user that I’ve never used before.
Display is normal, but when I changed my displays from Mirror to Extend, it now also has the same issue.

Deleting the config and display profiles will probably not work in this case since the system user with a clean profile has the same problem.

20+ years of using XFCE, so I don’t really want to change to another desktop manager

Has anyone else encountered this?

Please post more information about system

I booted using a BTRFS snapshot from a couple of days ago prior to the system upgrade yesterday to get a session.
This /may/ not be XFCE related.
Since I was back in, I installed Enlightenment and KDE Plasma. I forgot to use the --no-upgrade flag.

Enlightenment has the same issue as XFCE on my account, and a newly created user.
KDE was odd. Only the built-in panel and the HDMI connected monitor worked. The 2nd monitor connected via USB-C did not.

Once again, I removed .config/xfce4, .cache/xfce4, .local/share/xfce4 and it is working again with the latest snapshot.

I don’t know if exactly the same problem. My screen was in black and if I disconnect the display, I can continue working.
Maybe you can read my post and see if something similar

Thanks @ZeR0ByTe, I’ll look into that if this re-occurs.
I use the Intel adapter, but I do have the Nvidia drivers installed.
Apart from the hassle of re-configuring the desktop again, it seems okay at the moment.
The fact that Enlightenment had the same issue, and KDE had other display issues seem to indicate a driver problem.
(KDE with Wayland did not detect the external monitors at all)

Edit: After reading your post, your display config is the same as mine and I had the very same problem with KDE (the monitor connected to USB-C did not work, even thought it does on the login screen and the initial KDE splash screen).

Thanks again.

A post was split to a new topic: I have a similar issue #2

I was a bit hasty in my testing.
Deleting my XFCE configs did help me login and reconfigure my displays. But I rebooted in the evening and the problem was back.

I tried Garuda XFCE - same issue.
Garuda KDE (old ISO). This worked, but I did not upgrade.
CachyOS latest Live ISO. Same KDE issue with ‘stuck’ HDMI display and blank USB-C display.
Endeavor latest Live ISO. Same as CachyOS

I’ll try the solution @ZeR0ByTe suggested and if it fails, try and older kernel (whichever the Garuda KDE ISO ships with). Thanks @jmac

After installing Garuda, CachyOS and Endeavor, the results were mixed.
I’ve re-installed Manjaro XFCE and as I’m really not sure what’s causing this, I added the following exclusions to pacman.conf

IgnorePkg   = nvidia-utils linux612-nvidia linux-firmware-whence linux-firmware nvidia-prime linux612 linux-api-headers nvidia-settings lib32-nvidia-utils

NoUpgrade   = linux612-nvidia linux-firmware linux-api-headers linux612 linux-firmware-whence

Not ideal, but I have a system that’s working.

I cannot pin-point the issue and have been posting on various forums, where others are also experiencing similar issues.

Hardware related: No. Windows actually works
Manjaro: Unlikely, since Garuda, Cachy and Endeavor does the same, and I’ve seen a couple of posts on the main Arch forum.
XFCE: Possible, but KDE has a similar problem.
Nvidia: Possible. One of the XFCE dev’s suggested I try the Nouveau drivers, but I had the same problem.
Kernel: Possible, but I disabled kernel and nvidia updates on a working system, ran an update, and the problem appeared.
X11: Likely. I have not tried Wayland.

So I am at a loss until I can test on another machine and distro.

Title is no longer valid

Stable was synced again at March 30. 2025

[Stable Update] 2025-03-30 - Kernels, Gnome 48, Mesa, Plymouth, LibreOffice

I tested the March 30th release as soon as it dropped.
I had the same issue except that the laptop display remained blank even after disconnecting the externals.
I’ve tried some of the nvidia module options others suggested to fix the issue after resuming, but it did not help unfortunately.

While on the latest version, I deleted all xfcw/xfwm configs and state files to start clean. This worked until I set my displays to Extend and rebooted.

I’ve reverted back to the December update until I can test further.

There is no end to the pain of Nvidia users :grimacing:

Plymouth ?

Test on an ancient Dell Inspiron 3542 following the same process. Installed from XFCE 202412 ISO. Set the external display to Extended. Upgraded. No issues at all.
Confirms that it has to be Nvidia-related.
I had to the same issue with nouveau, so I’ll disable the discrete GPU in the BIOS.

Thanks all.
