Bad sound quality Pipewire

I recently switched to Manjaro from Windows, and I noticed that the sound quality was better on Windows (same laptop, HP 15). On Manjaro, the audio sounds like it’s coming from inside a box. I tried uninstalling PipeWire and switching to PulseAudio, but I couldn’t get it to work. I really want to improve the sound quality—can anyone help me?

Hi @iblacking

Please provide some system information (see below), and describe in as much detail as possible the steps you’ve taken.

This will allow a better understanding of your environment for those wishing to help, and discourage duplication of suggestions that you might have already done.

I’m sure someone will help as soon as they are able.

Regards.

Thanks for the information. Now, I’ll share some basic details about my PC and what I did.

First, I completely uninstalled PulseAudio to use PipeWire. Then, I did the opposite, but it didn’t work—I couldn’t hear anything. However, when I switched back to PipeWire, my PC was able to produce sound again.

Thanks for the effort. However, the best way to obtain useful information for Support purposes is to ask your system directly.

The command to do that was given above:

inxi --verbosity=8 --filter

Please provide the output from this command.

Place it between 2 rows of 3 backtick characters, like so:

```
[Your pasted command output here]
```

If you are concerned about privacy, please note that the --filter parameter filters out all personally identifiable information from the command output.

Regards.

Manjaro has metapackages manjaro-pulse and manjaro-pipewire to switch between PulseAudio and PipeWire audio servers

Specifications for Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb0000 shows system has proprietary software “Audio by B&O” to enhance audio to speakers on Windows that is not supported on Linux

Headphones or external speakers plugged in to 3.5mm jack is likely to deliver better audio quality from on board audio codec (Realtek ALC245) without additional processing software

Linux has Easyeffects and JamesDSP to enhance laptop speaker audio

pamac install easyeffects

[How To] Make Linux sound GREAT!

pamac build jamesdsp

[HowTo] Make Linux Sound BETTER, easier, with JamesDSP

System has 2 downward-facing speakers so speaker audio quality would be affected by the type of surface it is placed on

Low quality speaker audio is a common problem for modern thin laptops because speakers are too small to reproduce bass frequencies. Modern laptops also have lower power amplifiers for better battery life

Oh sorry, my bad. I didn’t share it because I thought it was too long, so I sent that one instead.Now I share the correct

Mod Edit:- Corrected command output formatting.

edited by nikgnomic to include audio information

Probably, the frequency response of the loudspeakers are linearized by the sound driver.

I suggest use this to show information about audio

inxi -Aa

and edit previous post to show audio information to confirm system is using PipeWire

Driver snd_hda_intel for analog output to speakers does not include any signal processing (DSP) to equalise or “linearize” audio frequencies

Easyeffects and JamesDSP both include a graphic equalizer to adjust audio frequencies

You misread/misunderstood the instructions given. Your post looked virtually no different than before you edited it; that might have indicated something was obviously wrong…

I have corrected the formatting for you.

In future you are expected to do this yourself according to forum guidelines. See the links previously given.

Regards.

inxi data in post #6 is incomplete and does not include Audio information
Not helpful for this topic

@iblacking

I suggest install JamesDSP to enhance laptop speaker audio

pamac build jamesdsp

There is the output

I have edited post #6 to include Audio information. More data will not help with audio quality issue

Data confirms pipewire, pipewire-pulse, and wireplumber are all active

System has pw-jack plugin so it would also be possible to use pipewire-jack Pro Audio profile with professional audio effects

Now is complete I’m so sorry, I trying to understand how it works everything
