Write to external SSD suddenly stops

Hello,

I’m really new to this forum here and hopefully I get help from someone. Thanks in advance …

The problem:
I want to do a backup to external SSD drive USB3.

Plugin the ssd will automount it into Manjaro (Gnome). Then I start the copy process with rsync to external drive. It starts but some time later it suddenly stops and my external drive stops blinking (read/write indication) and nothing happens anymore. I waited long time … nothing.
The drive becomes unavailable until next boot of OS.

Any idea what the issue is?
I tried a HDD attached to the same port, that works without issue.

Check your journal for errors:

nothing regarding the copying or disk or USB …

You’ve not read the “Howto” linked to above.
Please provide more information as to your system and problematic ssd on usb. Connect the device and post the output of

$ LANG=C inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

Do you see any log messages at all around the time the problem occurs?
Does lsusb still list the device?

The device is still listen in lsusb.

Hmm, sure looks serious. There are timeouts and I/O errors.

Did you try disabling any power saving features (tlp)?
Does that external ssd come in its own (manufacturer) encasing or is there a 3rd party encasing involved? I’ve had bad luck with one 3rd party encasing in the past, which manifested as similar symptoms. Try switching the encasing and/or cable.

Power saving cannot be because the issue appears after 20 sec file transfer …
I will try another case.
