WiFi Shows Very Low Strength and Drops Package

I installed Manjaro Linux on a second system and noticed significantly weaker Wi-Fi signal strength compared to my primary machine.

  • The primary system (Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset) shows full signal strength and works without issues.
  • The other system uses a MediaTek MT7925 (Filogic 360) wireless adapter and only shows 1 bar, with extremely poor usability despite being connected.
$ inxi -SN
System:
  Host: h3ll Kernel: 6.18.18-1-MANJARO arch: x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 6.5.6 Distro: Manjaro Linux
Network:
  Device-1: MEDIATEK MT7925 802.11be 160MHz 2x2 PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
    [Filogic 360] driver: mt7925e
Device-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet
    driver: r8169

What I have already checked

  • Installed firmware:

    pacman -Ss linux-firmware-mediatek
    core/linux-firmware-mediatek 20260309-1 [installed]

  • Power saving is disabled:

sudo iw dev wlo1 get power_save
    Power save: off

Issue

The MediaTek MT7925 adapter connects to Wi-Fi but has extremely weak signal strength and is practically unusable, while the Broadcom-based system in the same environment works perfectly.

Hi @tbhaxor; we would prefer the full inxi -zv8 output.

My initial guess would be that the WiFi antenna(s) aren’t properly connected (assuming a laptop with the antenna wires usually in the screen section). I find those horribly fiddly to attach at the best of times.

Thanks. I don’t suppose you have an external USB WIFi adapter to try?

Apart from checking the antenna connections or possibly swapping the cards between machines, if the same form-factor, but I do know (some) Lenovo machines are fussy about what cards they will accept.

Nope, it’s an builtin module.

That’s unfortunate. It does look like your only option is to get hold of a USB WiFi dongle. :man_shrugging:

Avoid the really cheap ones though; I got stung. Worked fantastically well for a few hours, great signal on both bands, but then started dropping out and packed up completely shortly afterwards, AFTER I’d left a good review …

Hi @tbhaxor ,
I wonder whether you could read the following posts in order to solve your problem.

I have installed the following kernel mod, the strength has bar has increased to 1 (still not 100%), but there are no drops and communication is working flawless as of now.

Until something breaks, this is the solution.
