Welcome and introduce yourself - 2025

Hi, started Linux adventure working with RHEL some years ago in a technical support environment. Have bounced around in various Debian distros since then. Just got into Arch-based distros.

Using Manjaro KDE and would say this one is my favorite distro and KDE really goes well with Manjaro (tried KDE with Kubuntu and did not like it).

Also like EndeavourOS.

@PowerDuDe @storm961 @el_octogono @tstevens966 Welcome to the forum. I’ve been using Manjaro KDE since August 2022 on a 10 year old Pioneer Computers Laptop, and experience no issues at all. My partner has a StarLite 2 in 1, running Manjaro KDE, and also has no issues.

HI, I installed Manjaro as my only and first OS a couple of months ago and I love it. I use my laptop mostly for coding in Python and a bit with html, JavaScript, Kotlin, etc. excited to join this community!!

My name is Alain and I live in Wettteren (a village near the city of Ghent in East Flanders). My native language is Dutch, so please forgive me if my English is not always correct. I am married and have two children aged 16 and 18. My hobbies include hiking, playing the bagpipes, and reading.
My experience with Linux is rather limited. Let’s just say I’m a graphical user. In the past, I have used Linux Ubuntu and Mint. A few weeks ago, I permanently removed Windows 10 from my desktop PC and installed Manjaro Xfce. I hope to find the necessary support here on the forum and also to learn a lot. Hopefully, I will then be able to help others with their first steps in the Linux world.

I taught myself English — with an Oxford pronunciation — around the age of 8-9 from watching television and matching the subtitles with what I heard. As such I could also quickly discern that the subtitles didn’t always match what was being said.

We only ever got English classes at school starting in 8th grade, and by that time, I was already able to carry a casual conversation in English, including the correct use of tenses and colloquialisms.

My English teacher — bless his soul; he was a good man and he died quite young (of cancer) — was absolutely baffled. “Where did you learn all that???”

Anyway, I also think in English.

Same. Especially with IT-/Programming-related stuff. Do not ask me Afrikaans words for some of the things there are. You’ll be disappointed. Except, perhaps, if I have my Good Friend, Interwebz, to consult. But even that’s not a definite.

I pretty much understood that (apart from the first and one of the other words) before translating. I find there are a lot of similarities between various languages.

Being a native English speaker puts us at a bit of a disadvantage; which other language(s) do we choose to learn first?
Also, at least when I was in education, language lessons weren’t available at the appropriate age, starting several years too late IMHO.

We also didn’t get to see European films with subtitles on a regular basis until the likes of Channel 4 and (later) FilmFour were on the scene.

However, I used to pick up various European radio stations in the 1980s and listen to programmes in German. They were usually re-broadcast in English afterwards, and the German was spoken by a non-native so nicely paced. There was one on (I think) YLE about the damage being caused by acid rain in the forests
that sadly wasn’t repeated in English but I think I got the gist.

Hello, I’m Atilio. 65 years old. Aficionado of electronics and computing. I switched to Manjaro a year ago, so I wouldn’t go back to Windows. On the ground I’m interested in using it as an end user, but I also know Linux from a background. I would like to contribute to the topics that I know about. I like to help and I hope to exchange a lot in this forum. My native language is Spanish, but I can speak english as well.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well. I am passionate about programming, and I recently decided to switch from Windows to Linux as my operating system. The distribution that caught my attention the most was
I hope to learn a lot and be able to collaborate with you in the future.

I like programming with Go and really enjoy learning new skills such as soft skills, algorithm analysis and others. Thank you very much for accepting me and I hope you all enjoy this Linux distribution as much as I do.

For sure most of us do, most of the time  and it’s nice to have new folks in the forum.

Hi everyone,

I began using Manjaro a few months ago but just now have the opportunity to come on here to say hello–although I have been snooping through this forum from time to time to get ideas or find answers. I’m not very techy, just a fairly Average Jane who got completely fed up with that certain OS that seems to dominate the world. My first intro to LInux came from when a friend of mine loaded Fedora on my old laptop several years ago, so I used that every now and then. But once I decided I wanted to completely switch over, I wasn’t sure if Fedora would work with the online course I was taking and thus began my distro search. I previewed or tried a few others and landed on Manjaro. I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to complete my course with Manjaro either since the course is very heavily tied into software on that other OS, but I’ll ask for opinions in another topic category if I get the chance. I do hope I can find a way around this because I really enjoy using Manjaro and really do not want to go backwards to you-know-who.

Anywho, I hope I kept it short enough. I greatly appreciate this forum and the wiki; you all make it that much easier for newbies like me to learn!

That’s where the forum can shine - sometimes  often we can get it down to simple mindless copy/pasting and get results.

Either way, joining the forum instead of relying on reddit is a feather in your cap already!

Hi all

I’m a 50+ yo Swedish man just starting out with Manjaro. The particular computer I’ve installed Manjaro on is an PC built 2010 (I think) based on an Intel i5-750. Even though Microsoft seem to think I should upgrade my hardware, I choose to upgrade my OS.

I have plenty of Linux experience as a user, having used it at work for decades, and I’ve had various distributions installed at home over the years (starting with Slackware in the mid 90s), but I think this is the first time I actually install it with the purpose of actually using the computer for real. At least to start out, I aim to use it mainly for Blender and games (even though it’s old and slow
)
