USB headset not charging while in use

Hello everyone. I have a headset called Creative SXFI Air. It has a USB, AUX and Bluetooth connection. On Windows, if I connect the headset via USB it will charge and I’ll be able to use it freely. On Linux, it won’t charge unless it’s turned off, or connected via a different connection, which I do not want for reasons I’ll talk about later. I’ve read about the headset on Creative’s website and they claim it won’t charge when it’s in USB Mass Storage mode. Someone online gave me a udev script that’d make it not mount to USB Mass Storage, but unfortunately it didn’t work. Maybe I made a mistake of some kind. I’m new to Linux, I am tech savvy, but still a newb when it comes to Linux. I reached out to Creative, and I got the classic response “Linux is unsupported”. Well, the headset works great. It’s just this charging thing that’s annoying.

So why don’t I use a different connection? Because the headset will turn off after 10 minutes of not playing anything, the microphone will not work, and I have to unplug and replug for charging to work, which is annoying.

Is something like this fixable? I’d really appreciate your input. I’m struggling with this for months. Thanks for having me and thanks for your time.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

  3. Reclassified to hardware support.

Hello Fabby, thanks for the reply. I added the same information written here in the OP.

Thank you!

It’s an unknown device: no kernel drivers have been written for it (yet) and as the vendor isn’t in the USB ID Database yet, it’ll take a while before there is any kernel support.

So the only thing to do is to contact Creative and whine and complain there is no Linux support yet and next time before you buy a product, contact the manufacturer when Linux support will be released and if they don’t support Linux, don’t support that company with your hard-earned cash.

:sob:

Oh, I’m sorry, perhaps I should have highlighted it but you’re looking at the wrong device. I don’t know what the device you quoted is exactly, but the device I need assistance with is this one:

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 041e:3258 Creative Technology, Ltd Creative SXFI AIR

The headset works fine, audio quality wise and functionality wise. It’s just the charging and turning off after 10 minutes thing that isn’t working as it does on Windows and can be annoying sometimes. I’m going to highlight every mention of the headset in the outputs in the OP.

Edit: Trying to highlight it messes up the formatting, unfortunately.

Sorry about that!

What does

usb_modeswitsch --default-vendor 041e --default-product 3258

do?

I got this:

Look for default devices ...
Found devices in default mode (1)
Access device 013 on bus 005
Error opening the device. Abort

No problem, by the way! Thanks for your time.

Perhaps it’s time I post a script someone on Reddit gave me. They told me to make a file named /lib/udev/rules.d/41_modeswitch_SB.rules, with the following contents:

#Creative SFXI Air

ATTR{idVendor}="041e", ATTR{idProduct}=="3258", RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -K -v 041e -p 3258"

It unfortunately didn’t work. Running /usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -K -v 041e -p 3258 gave me this:

Look for default devices ...
Found devices in default mode (1)
Access device 014 on bus 005
Error opening the device. Abort

Perhaps I did something wrong here?

Try this:

OK, so it’s a non-switchable device, so that’s not it.

What’s the output of pacmd dump

(And I know your mum raised you to be a nice and polite person, but please stop thanking me until we’ve found a solution!)

Haha, noted, sorry about that. That’s just a way of showing my gratitude. I honestly just appreciate your persistence in helping me and the time you put into this just for my bother. I wrote about this issue in other places, and either it didn’t get as much attention, or I got answers that I could easily find on Google. To be fair, I did phrase it differently, but still. Believe me, I’d rather be spending hours on Google searching for potential fixes to apply on my own than bother any of you people. ;p

@nikgnomic Can you have a look at this audio hardware problem?

Summary:

  • USB 041e:3258 Creative SXFI Air headset
  • Kernel 5.11
  • Creative’s website claim it won’t charge when it’s in USB Mass Storage mode, but already verified with usb_modeswitsch it’s not a mass storage device as default.
  • if OP connects the headset via USB it will charge and is able to use it freely on Windows. On Linux, it won’t charge unless it’s turned off.
  • If connected through Bluetooth, it’ll turn off if not playing anything

Do you know anything about this shìt stuff?

I have a workaround in mind if you don’t and that’s to create a script that plays a really high frequency, low volume pop unnoticeable to OP, but want to call in the cavalry before doing that. :scream:

I did some research on blueetooth headphones earlier this year
(not headsets because microphone audio in HSP/HPF is awful generally, and worse on Linux)
Most of them have to be turned off for charging on any OS, so the audio devices would not be available
Some premium headset models mention that they can be used for audio when charging, but I have not seen any confirmed to work on Linux in the same way

Creative Technology has a long history of not co-operating with anyone, and they do not release anything about their heavily patented and trademarked hardware
The Linux community has tried for decades to get help to support their products, but it is usually ignored. If Creative hardware has any support in Linux it usually because a competent and determined Linux user spent a long time to hack the hardware

I tried a lot of internet searches for this headset but could not find anything about it relating to Linux
No trace of the VendorID: Product ID [041e:3258] on linux-hardware.org
even for the supported OS it is difficult to find much information generally about the hardware, information is mostly about the Super X-Fi® processing software

Checking manufacturer’s website shows why this headset is recognised as a mass storage device

https://creative.com/p/super-x-fi/creative-sxfi-air
The Creative SXFI AIR also boasts an SD card slot that makes it an MP3 Player

The card slot gave me an idea that there may be a way to hack the internal configuration/firmware
Rockbox can replace the firmware on mp3 players and unlock better functionality
But a lot of time trawling through forum posts about creative zen players did not reveal anything that could be used with this headset
It might be possible to hack the audio chip in the headset, but it would be far from easy

Thanks for getting back to me and for taking the time to do all this research just for my bother. In case you didn’t notice the headset has a USB port which can be used to connect the headset to the computer. This is how I currently use it. I just connect it with USB and turn it on. It works just fine. However, on Windows you can connect the headset via USB, use it, and charge it simultaneously. On Linux, only the former. Tried to unplug and replug, no dice. I tried checking out some USB programs on Windows, which display lots of information about each USB port, such as how much current the USB port can deliver to a device, but it’s the same on both Windows and Linux (100mA). I thought about using Ndiswrapper (no idea if it’s meant for that purpose) but I can’t find the Windows driver for the headset, either. I’m very confused. What does work, though, is connecting via Bluetooth, plugging the USB cable, then unplugging it and replugging it. That way you can use the headset while it’s charging, albeit with latency and no mic (I think the latter is just my dongle). I’m going to check out Rockbox some time soon. Hopefully something can be done about this. I’m aware of Creative’s poor Linux support, but considering that their wired headsets work just fine under Linux from my personal experience (I used to have a SoundBlasterX H6), I believe that there’s a solution for the wireless one, too, no?

This is open source software, so there is always a solution, but what @nikgnomic is trying to say is:

  • You have to become a hacker,
  • take the thing apart,
  • hook up an oscilloscope,
  • develop the driver yourself, building on drivers that other determined people built already.

because:

The globally unique USB manufacturer/model number of the piece of hardware you own is totally unknown to anyone in the Linux world as it doesn’t even exist in http://linux-hardware.org/ which is the first starting point in doing the whole hacking thing.

So no, we cannot tell you change this bit and it’ll start working

:sob:

Which leaves you with two possibilities:

  • Return that piece of hardware for a full refund saying it’s not Linux compatible and advertise everywhere not to buy Creative any more just like this one hurt nVidia a few years ago.
  • Buy Linux compatible hardware from this point forward and live with what you have…

What a shame… In any case, I created a probe of my computer and uploaded it to linux-hardware.org.

The probe can be found here: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=c04e6666e7

I left a comment explaining the charging issue on the headset and it is currently awaiting approval. Hopefully this is useful to someone else, and that one day it will work as it should out of the box. If I happen to find anything, I’ll make sure to post about it here.
