USB Headset microphone floating bug: sound disappears every 2sec-15min

have you tried pipewire + alsa ?

sorry, Im not sure what does it mean pipewire + alsa…
I thought alsa is something low level & manjaro in any case use alsa (out of the box)…

I tried to switch to pipewire today. I dont remember exactly what commands I executed, but it was something like:

  1. I removed everything connected to pulseaudio (e.g. pacman -R manjaro-pulse);
  2. I installed pipewire (e.g. pacman -S manjaro-pipewire) + wireplumber I assume;
  3. reboot
  4. Installed pipewire-pulse;
  5. reboot
  6. Checked inxi, it said that pipewire currently running and pulseaudio with jack is not. Checked pactl info and it said that it’s running “fake” pulseaudio with real pipewire backend.

Can u please provide me a link or smth to read about alsa setup… because from my side I thought that I already using it.
Also, in original topic I mentioned that I tried pipewire and the problem still was here.

btw, right now I tried inxi and it says to me that:

So, I have pipewire & pulseaudio running in one time…
Maybe I messed up it’s service during today experiments (because before there was no such behavior).

so I will experiment with micro right now and then will disable pipewire using:

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket pipewire.service

and re-experiment one more time :slight_smile:

check status with alsactl alsamixer ( no Mute ‘M’ )
not forget to do alsactl store after

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture#Tips_and_tricks

after in pavucontrol and apps

you should use -Rs option to remove scripts / configs ,
and adding
manjaro-pipewire , manjaro-wireplumber - manjaro-alsa remove manjaro-pulseausio

not forget

 pipewire-zeroconf: Zeroconf support
 realtime-privileges: Realtime privileges for users

so, regarding experiments:

pipewire & pulseaudio running both in same time

State: machine up for something like 5h, I havent used mic for 2-3h, pulseaudio & pipewire running both (logs upper).

  1. Tried to use mic – no sound;
  2. Changed profile in pavucontrol from analog duplex, to analog out digital in, and then back – microphone started his work;
  3. Microphone working already something like 2 minutes;
  4. I closed google meet tab where I checked is microphone alive;
  5. I opened new google meet tab, and microphone is dead; (u can assume that there was no breaks between each steps, except specified);

Note: I was listening music whole time, and there was no music interaptions or smth like that, except times when I opened&closed pavucontrol .

preparation for the second part of experiment

only pulseaudio running

  1. Tried to use mic – no sound;
  2. Changed profile in pavucontrol from analog duplex, to analog out digital in, and then back – microphone started his work;
  3. Microphone working for something like 10-15 seconds;
  4. I closed google meet tab where I checked is microphone alive;
  5. I opened new google meet tab, and microphone is dead; (u can assume that there was no breaks between each steps, except specified);

Note: I was listening music whole time, and there was no music interaptions or smth like that, except times when I opened&closed pavucontrol .

Outcome

Nothing changed when I killed pipewire.
What is more interesting – when I re-open google meet: microphone brakes, it’s kinda fast way to reproduce floating bug… probably it’s not floating any more :slight_smile:

@stephane, regarding ur request with alsa - don’t worry, that what I will try to do right now.
btw, thanks for help, we already found fast way to reproduce an issue :slight_smile:

be careful kernel 6.0 or 6.1 can change on audio system

So, currently microphone is broken.

Im not sure what is going here, but seems to be it’s not muted… lets try disabling automute.

[xionix@xio manjaro-roccat-suicide]$ echo $?

also I tried to play in GUI (alsamixer)… and from it side I can see that mic is not muted, I tried to mute&unmute it – it doesn’t help. I tried to control volume of music – it works properly.

Should I install pipewire and try to play with alsa one more time?

what if I will try to update to 6.1.1-1… probably it will be resolved somehow? :slight_smile:
or will it gain only more pain?

you can have more than one kernel ,

sudo pacman -S linux515-headers
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux60
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux61

go in grub > advanced options > select kernel

Seems the typical problem about intel audio and 5.15.8x kernel
If so, just install any 6.x kernel, and it will work fine again.

@stephane @Nachordez
Hi guys,
So I update to 6.1.1-1.
For me it looks like no changes at all.

Sound/mic habits remains totally same as on 5.15.x kernel.

Also, I tried to play with mute in aslamixer one one more time - it doesn’t help at all.

Also, I noticed that when micro works in pavucontrol I have a bar showing that Im something talking in mic:
image

But, when microphone dies, this bar just disappears :confused:
image

I tried right now to play with loopback (to hear micro sound in headphones).

So, micro works properly without any cracks or smth, and sound from micro just disappears when I close any app that using mic (e.g. I close google meet tab).

Sorry to hear that… Your intel CPU is older than ones known to be affected by the kernel question, but I really was hoping to be related. It seems to be a different question, and I don’t have ane clue now, I can’t help…

no problems, I understand that my problem is kinda… special… Im dealing with it 2 years for now… and I think that the only thing that I haven’t found anywhere on net :slight_smile:

btw, updating to new kernel leaded to more problems. Now, with 6.1.1-1 I have the same behavior not only with microphone, but with headphones too :smiling_face_with_tear:
So, when I try to listen music in some service (e.g. Spotify) or watch some video on Youtube – nothing works until I change profile for headset in pavucontrol.
To be specific:

  • Video on Youtube just trying to load (loading wheel is spinning) and if I will wait around 10 seconds – some error raised saying that I need to try to restart PC, and if errror will not go away – contact support.
  • Music in web service is not playing – playing cursor just freezes on 0:01 second of track and if I will change profile – it will imminently start playing music.

One idea: so that it’s not recent hardware, and seems to work even worse in new kernel… Have you tried to downgrade to older kernel than 5.15? There are some older LTS kernels offered by Manjaro, an new kernel is basically needed for new hardware, so could be a solution, or at least something worth to try!

as I said in original message I was living with this behavior from 5.10.x to latest. (already around 2 years)

btw, I installed 5.10.161-1 kernel and right from the start I reproduced microphone problem.
What I found in journalctl logs:

Jan 11 12:33:16 xio kernel: usb 4-6.4: current rate 16000 is different from the runtime rate 48000

and… seems to be 5.10 is even more unstable

I assume that there is some generic problem with bus inside my motherboard (Asus X99-deluxe/u3.1). I will continue my experiments in direction of changing ports and checking lsusb -t, so try to put headset in different bus, alone from other devices.

@Nachordez @stephane
Seems to be bug gone when I plugged heaset in USB ports that are soldered via pins on motherboard (to connect case usb ports).
I assumed that it because it’s USB 2, but not 3… but there is some USB2 on back of my motherboard – and there headset keeps bugging.
Im not sure that it’s totally gone, but there is nothing as I described for something like 2hours, which is record time! and I cannot reproduce issue with google meet tab reopen.

Im running 5.15.85-1 kernel right now, but will try to use 6.1.1-1 later… I don’t think that it will change something.
