USB-C Display stopped working

my USB-C → HDMI display suddenly stopped working today. The monitor works on plain HDMI and the USB-C HDMI output also doesn’t work with another USB-C HDMI adapter.

The Alternate Mode configuration seems successful[1] (sudo lsusb -vd 2109:0102), but xrandr doesn’t list the other monitor as connected.

How can I continue debugging?

This may be your best resolve. Is it a super-duper high resolution screen?
I’m seeing a few issues lately with those, especially in X11.

I’m using 2 external screens - one via native HDMI and one using an USB-C/HDMI dongle (USB-C hub). This setup was working for nearly 3 years now.

That being the case, it might be prudent to post your full system information to enable others to help you diagnose the issue.

Have you changed anything recently, either hardware or in configs?

Did you reboot after the last update?

Did you install any thunderbolt daemon like bolt? Is it a pure display connection or via some kind of docking station?

Maybe you updated the BIOS which maybe reset the authorization?

Did you reboot after the last update?

several times.

Did you install any thunderbolt daemon like bolt? Is it a pure display connection or via some kind of docking station?

No, I’ve installed displaylink afterwards, without success.
I’ve tried it with an Typ-c Hub 6 in 1 [1] and with a standard Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter[2] on my P15v Gen1 [3].

Maybe you updated the BIOS which maybe reset the authorization?

I checked the BIOS settings and they looked fine. I activated everything thunderbolt related. Is there a specific settings I should verify?

The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux61
   * linux65

Manjaro Version
ManjaroLinux 23.0.4 Uranos

I didn’t change any hardware. I did not make config changes, that I’m aware of. I’ve tried some stuff regarding H265 acceleration on ~ 16 th Sep, but I rebootet afterwards.

...
reboot system boot 6.5.5-1-MANJARO Wed Oct 18 10:36 - 12:04 (01:27)
reboot system boot 6.5.3-1-MANJARO Wed Sep 20 10:06 - 10:35 (28+00:28)
reboot system boot 6.5.1-1-MANJARO Mon Sep 18 10:20 - 10:02 (1+23:41)
...

The problem occured after disconnecting and reconnecting the usb-c hub. I didn’t restart before it occured the first time. I did restart several times afterwards. Would my pacman.log file help?

I’m not sure I’d know what to look for in relation to USB-C unless it was something obvious. It might help someone, so it won’t hurt to post it anyway.

Start journalctl -fk and plug it in. Can you see any change?

2109:0102 is the id of the USB 2.0 BILLBOARD. The output of lsusb -vd 2109:0102 is in my initial post.

I’ve uploaded the log to privatebin:
privatebin .net/?0f043019e29ebfa5#7iuPeBoCuALn1o8w8a46ga8nNrBgPQV2WsQsdzgbUvRG

Nothing obvious in that.

I notice you’ve have an ongoing issue (several months) with 5.9.16-1 kernel:

ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-5.19-x86_64'
ERROR: '/lib/modules/5.9.16-1-MANJARO' is not a valid kernel module directory

which is no longer installed but appears still to be referenced somewhere. You might want to tend to that at some point.

any ideas how to debug this further?

I’m not seeing anything obvious in the information provided. You might try swapping the cable(s) in case they may be damaged. Beyond that, I have nothing to suggest, however, someone else might.

You could try switching to the 6.1 LTS kernel, or 6.4 kernel, to see if that makes a difference (a reboot would then be required).

Manjaro Kernels

ok, I tried it with my private lenovo and it worked, also with a live manjaro. The same live manjaro didn’t work on my laptop. So I reset the bios and played around with thunderbold settings - without luck.
So I downgraded the BIOS, but I couldn’t downgrade the ECP and I still had that issue.

After updating the BIOS again, it suddenly vanished and the HDMI on USB-C is working again \o/

I don’t really know why.
