Updates no longer possible, pamac not working

I was wondering why I don’t receive any update notifications anymore lately, so I wanted to launch the "add-remove software manually in the kde gui, but it did not launch.

I then tried to run pamac via the terminal, and got this error message

pamac: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libpamac.so.11: file too short

with a file manager, I see that the file does not exist, but there is a file libpamac-snap.so.11.1 of zero length (empty file)

How can I restore or re-install pamac ?

I tried installing it using pacman, but it failed

sudo pacman -S pamac  1 ✘  4s 

I looked at the package on a repository, and I believe your sync database is out of date. Try a sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack.

See: Pacman-mirrors - Manjaro, also search the forum, it shows up a lot.

Thanks for your quick reply.

sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack finished succesfully, but I stil cannot re install pamac, pacman cannot retrieve the pamac files and says they are all empty.

do “sudo pacman -Syyu” and then “sudo pacman -S pamac”

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in but have you tried running a full system update with pacman rather than just trying to install pamac?

There is only one kernel installed, if I remove that one, there is none, so nothing will work anymore.

I cannot install an additional kernel because of the failed dependency error message.
Does this mean that I need to re install the entire OS ?

If you remove 5.14 it should solve the dependency issue and the kernel will be still loaded in memory so if you don’t turn off the computer it should be okay, but after uninstalling it install the newer one,
but to be safe you can just remove for now linux514-nvidia and then it should allow you to install another kernel and such while keeping linux514 just for safety but without the nvidia driver,

tldr: uninstall for now linux514-nvidia, do “sudo pacman -Syyu”, install newer kernel and appropriate drivers, reboot, if everything works as it should you can now complete removing the linux514 whole

I was able to install an LTS kernel and the latest non LTS, and remove 5.14,
after removing virtualbox and a number of nvidia things.

sudo pacman -Syyu runs, but did not do any updates because of a number of pamac errors.
removing or re installing pamac did not work either.

I guess it is time for a restart with one of the newly installed kernels, hope that the PC starts, and try to update or re install pamac from there ?

I guess you could do “sudo pacman -S --overwrite /* pamac” or “sudo pacman -S --overwrite /* libpamac-snap-plugin libpamac-flatpak-plugin libpamac --asdeps” and then “sudo pacman -Syyu” will update system
also don’t forget to install the gpu drivers for the new kernels

Oops, no luck.
nvidia opensource drivers have been installed though.

ah, wrong slash

It seems I am getting in dependency hell

sudo pacman -R libpamac-snap-plugin libpamac-flatpak-plugin libpamac  1 ✘

this should work sudo pacman -S --overwrite \* libpamac-snap-plugin libpamac-flatpak-plugin libpamac --asdeps

Yesss, it worked, and sudo pacman -Syyu also worked, and now pamac and its gui equivalent also works.

Thank you so much for your help !!!

I guess it is time for a reboot into one of the newly installed kernels now or should I also install the proprietary nvidia drivers first, with these installed, my battery life was considerably longer ?

if you want the proprietary drivers then install them now

Thanks, I rebooted into the latest kernel, and everything seems ok now.
Glad I did not have to re install everything (I made backups though just in case)

Any idea as to the root cause?

It was a pain for OP, but I’d like to know the technical in’s and out’s if possible, so I avoid doing it  and hopefully learn something in the process and pass it on.
