Unexpected Ctrl + . behavior

Hi!
As many of you will know, Ctrl + . is a shortcut to quick fix errors in VSCode, like by importing missing Modules etc.
For the last week or so this doesnt work anymore, instead pressing Ctrl + . makes an underlined e appear on screen. It can’t be removed via backspace unless I press escape first. Typing other characters makes them also appear underlined^^. Changing focus to some other window triggers even more weird behaviour, now everything I do, be it clicking somewhere, or pressing Ctrl+z pastes the previously underlined characters where I clicked or pressed ctrl+z.
This happens not only in vscode, also in other applications.
I have no idea what this function is called or why anyone would want to use it. Most importantly I dont know how to turn it off, please help ^^’

Ctrl + . opens the emoji picker - or it should - but in some installs you’ll see that e. If you press SPACE when you see the e, the emoji picker will appear.

I had this ‘e’ thing happen with manjaro gnome earlier this year, but since clean installing 21.1 that ships with kernel 5.13 it seems to work correctly (eg: emoji only with native apps)
When I had the ‘e’ issue you describe, sometimes it would get stuck in that input mode & I would be forced to restart the computer. Results were really unpredictable. Space, pick emoji & then close the pop-up is one way to get through it.
