Unable to launch Flameshot from keyboard shortcut

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble using Flameshot with a keyboard shortcut on Manjaro Linux.
I configured the shortcut exactly as indicated in the official guide:
:point_right: https://flameshot.org/docs/guide/key-bindings/#on-ubuntu-and-other-gnome-based-distros

However, whenever I try to launch Flameshot via the shortcut, it doesn’t start. Instead, I get a notification saying:

impossible to capture the screen

If I launch Flameshot manually from the application’s menu or using the same command from terminal, it works fine. The issue only happens when using the key binding.

Has anyone else faced this on Manjaro? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Would help if you’d post the result of inxi -zv8c0 for starters.

But anyways. I understand from your link, that you are using Gnome (and the tag)? Are you using Wayland on it? When I changed to Wayland, I had issues with Flameshot until I installed a patch for Flameshot on Wayland from the repo.

Yes, I’m using Wayland…

Do you remember the patch you had installed?

Gnome has got it’s own integrated tool for making screenshots - already bound to this shortcut by default.

I do not know the (terminal) command for that.

Perhaps you first need to disable that built in function. :man_shrugging:

Or simply use another, unoccupied shortcut …

dconf-editor might be needed for this

Gnome is strange in many ways.

It’s nothing more than pressing the print-key (on an German keyboard Druck).
And that works way better than any special applet I’ve ever tried.

Unfortunately not, but I did find a few other resources that might help:

This is from Flameshot’s own site about troubleshooting Flameshot on Wayland.

And then there’s this one on these forums: Shortkeys not working after update Gnome Wayland

Hopefully these are of use.

Wayland Help | Flameshot

Gnome shortcut does not trigger Flameshot

Symptom: When using a shortcut (Print screen) to run Flameshot I get “Unable to capture screen”. When I run the command from the shortcut in a terminal, it works. Both used to work fine before, but stopped working after my daily updates. The normal Gnome screenshot program still works. [source]

We don’t have a definite answer of what in Gnome have changed, but Gnome users have provided the following solution:

Run the flameshot gui via a shell script

script --command "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland flameshot gui" /dev/null
# or
bash -c -- "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland flameshot gui"
# or
sh -c -- "QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland flameshot gui"

If this didn’t solve your issue or if you are not sure what you do about this, Best places to look for are #3365 and #3326.

Reset Gnome shortcut permission

In Gnome Wayland the users is asked if they want to give permission to the screenshot tool to capture the screen. It is possible to hit the wrong button and permanently block Flameshot from taking the screenshot. The workaround have been proposed by the community. Running the following command in terminal would reset the permission in Gnome Wayland:

dbus-send --session --print-reply=literal --dest=org.freedesktop.impl.portal.PermissionStore /org/freedesktop/impl/portal/PermissionStore org.freedesktop.impl.portal.PermissionStore.D
eletePermission string:'screenshot' string:'screenshot' string:''

Gnome Help - Screenshots and screencasts

I know.
I tried with a default Manjaro Gnome installation.

Gnome has got it’s own built in screenshot tool for that already - using this very shortcut.
It’s not a special applet - it is a built in functionality.
(you can take screenshots with it - without installing flameshot or any extra program)

Assigning the same shortcut to flameshot as well might create a conflict.

Yes, it makes a screenshot but nothing more.

Flameshot has more gadgets I need. You can edit the snapshot on the fly, put square in the place you want to focus, numbers, text, blur content…

Thank for you help, but seems it doesn’t solve the problem.

Tomorrow I will try it again.
