Unable to boot past Mobo/Manjaro Loading screen after 09/02 update

Hello, before the update my computer was running normally. I did the update and restarted and now my computer will post to bios and then gets stuck on a black screen. I tried seeing if it was a gui problem and tried switching tty to CRL+ALT +F2/F1 but its also is a black screen. I’ve tried restarting multiple times to no avail. I can’t access a terminal so I don’t know exactly what logs or anything I can get to be helpful.
I have
amd GPU and CPU
kernel 6.10
Nvme SSD
Ddr5 expo ram
Gnome for my desktop

I can access the menu by hitting shift on boot
I’m on kernel 6.10 I’m gonna try booting to 6.9 and see if that helps… Did not help going to try plugging my monitor into my motherboard instead and use integrated graphics…uh it did something, now instead of a black screen it get stuck at just showing the Manjaro boot w/ Mobo logo instead of black screen and I can switch w/ CRL alt f2 but instead of being a black screen it stops input to the monitor and monitor goes into standby. I think I may be approaching the issue? A problem w/ amd gpu integrated or discrete graphics? Going to restart and see if problem persists… Yup now consistently doing the same thing. Flashes Mobo/Manjaro logo goes black then switched to loading version, three loading dots all flash then go into done loading version of three dots and gets stuck there. Versus would finish loading and then go to black screen when it was plugged into discrete amd GPU…

Should I consider my desktop bricked and reinstall fresh?

Are you able to chroot into the system using a Live USB?

manjaro-chroot -a

If so, could you provide the results of inxi-zv8 for us (highlight the pasted text and press the </> button at the top of the reply window).

Also the 6.9 Kernel is EOL. Having that on the system will likely cause issues with updates. I’d suggest remove that, then maybe try linux66 and / or linux61 (both LTS) as well.

If you are able to chroot and remove the linux69 kernel, you could try re-running the update.

Also: do you have any Timeshift snapshots etc.?

I will go try to chroot with a live usb now to get inxi and remove linux69, I dont think i have any timeshift snaps or anything but i can check.

When you chroot in Live boot:
I recommend to remove quiet and splash in your grub file, you can edit it with sudo nano /etc/default/grub after saving.

sudo update-grub

This shows everything around your boot, it probably also could cure your blackscreen problem.

Okay chroot was easier to do than i thought it would be, first here is inxi -zv8

Okay so awkward question, I can’t seem to be able to remove linux69 because my liveboot usb is running linux69 how can i update the live usb kernel? I literally just downloaded this one off manjaro website. I also removed quiet and splash from grub file like Kobold recommended. I also have no timeshift snapshots I should make one before i update from now on…

This is surprising to be honest; in chroot it should be able to manage the installed kernels regardless, but I guess you could try a (not too much) older .ISO (although this isn’t generally recommended) with e.g. the 66 kernel.

I’ll try that, I confirmed i chrooted into the correct mnt and im simply running

[manjaro-gnome /]# mhwd-kernel -r linux69
Error: You can't remove your current kernel.

Ill go try and find a linux66 iso

You create only a timeshift snapshot when your system is running fine… normally you would do this before you update your system.

Wait, i just removed it with pacman and its gone… I don’t know why i couldn’t do it with mhwd-kernel.

Should be. Try rebooting, going into chroot again and issuing

mhwd-kernel -li

(you might get away with just exiting and then re-entering the chroot environment).

Okay, so the kernel was for sure removed. I tried booting back into the original drive and it shows a screen that states something about early hooks and then something about how a hub failed? Then it just shows an underline for a terminal in the top left of the screen that is unblinking. If i switch tty it just turns into a blinking underline. I’m guessing omega bricked? I tried both linux66 and linux610.
Ill try to get a picture so i can see what it says better…

So it states…

running early hook [udev]
running hook [udev]
tiggering uevents
3.181042 hub 10-0:1.0: config failed, hub doesnt have any ports!

It then at least runs through the starting manjaro code but still goes to the still underline in the top left of the monitor…

You replied to yourself btw.

You may want to chroot again from live boot and try if you don’t missed any updates?

You could also may copy your Grub Code in here, hopefully you don’t do a mistake while editing Grub.

Chroot from Live Boot and try to update again?

sudo pacman -Syu && pamac update

TBH i have no experience around this error.

It said its all up to date when i tried that, at this rate im guessing reinstalling is the best option. How can i get a folder out of chroot? Im trying to use the cp command but it doesnt seem to be able to find my internal harddrive…
I’ve been trying different variations of this but no matter what it cant seem to find my other internal drive…

sudo cp -r /home/abog/Documents/MineCraftServer /dev/nvme1n1/

If you have chrooted it should be mounted… but you can also mount it in dolphin, if you want.

Next time use a external drive for Timeshift (Rsync) with a ext4 partition…
then you don’t have to reinstall in future.

Its mounted but its not showing up in the file explorer only my secondary drive and the manjaro usb weirdly. Ill keep looking around.

This shows all drives:

lsblk -f

But for a better overview you can also open Gparted, if you want.

I found it in the file explorer from that, thank you. I got everything i needed from the main drive to my secondary. Time to fresh reinstall. Thank you!
