Unable to boot/black screen after botched update

I am unable to boot into my system, I’ve read few posts with issues similar to mine and tried following along but I think I might be making things worse. I would really appreciate some help because I really need to get back in.

The problem started while trying to update through the GUI, while updating the window just closed with no indication of what just happened. The system was still responsive, so I opened the package manager window again to update, it then said something about another window. Anyway nothing seemed to be happening, I didn’t think it was updating in the background or anything so I logged out and got a black screen, so I just forced my computer to shut down.

Tried booting back up but it said /boot/vmlinuz not found. I found this post which I tried following. I chrooted then ran the commands to update and then got an error about some conflict and a load of various files already existing. I found this which sounds similar so ran the update with the overwrite all option.

This got rid of the missing vmlinuz error, but now I just get a blank black screen and cannot even drop into TTY. I came across this guide but it didn’t help in my case.

I tried following advice on another post but I think that was more specific to graphic drivers. I can’t remember what I ran, it was something like mhwd -l plus something but it told me some file in /usr/lib/ was too short, followed the advice in post to copy from iso into my chroot environment, after running previous command it was then able to display some output. But didn’t help with the black screen issue.

Anyway, as you can tell I have no idea what I’m doing, I would really appreciate your help here.

Here is the system info:

The tutorial you mentioned lists some good troubleshooting steps, however in this case I think this was your issue

It’s a risk everytime someone performs a hard shutdown or reset, but even more so while updating.

A safer method is to use REISUB/REISUO:

It does need some configuring before you can use it, but it’s well worth the effort.

Try this tutorial instead. :eyes:

As the title suggests, it’s written for just this type of situation.

If yours is a new installation and you opted to use a BTRFS (default filesystem on new ISO’s since Manjaro 25.0) then make sure to use the correct method to enter a chroot environment (examples are given in the tutorial).

Important: Please note that the manjaro-chroot -a command will not work properly with a BTRFS filesystem.

I hope this helps.

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I have actually used the second guide, I did link it in my message, however it didn’t solve the problem as it seemed like I had other issues.

The first link looks like instructions on how to safely shutdown, unless I’ve missed something I don’t see any instructions on recovery from a hard shutdown.

I’m just reading the latest stable update post, and it seems others have had issues with pamac freezing/closing. But they were smart enough to check with htop or wait much longer than I did.

That’s exactly what is was; as mentioned. it’s a safer alternative to a hard shutdown or reset. It will no doubt be useful for future reference.

The second link Recovering from an interrupted update/upgrade describes the procedure to place you in a position to perform any number of operations.

In a chroot environment you are the super user (root), with unrestricted access to your machine, so every command you use has consequences. In other words, be certain you understand what a command does before using it.

What happens next depends greatly on what the problem is discovered to be. Some of the most common scenarios might include attempting to complete a failed sync/update, repairing or reinstalling the GRUB bootloader and/or kernels, or performing disk operations.

All that and more is possible.

Considering the cause of the problem, attempting to complete the update seems like a good place to start.

If you’re not experienced with the commandline, then you’re at a disadvantage, but as long as you specifically tell others what you’re having trouble with, someone will point you to information needed.

Remember, we can’t see what you see, and we rely on what you tell us. If you’re offered a command to use, and it seems to do nothing, avoid just saying “it didn’t work” (or similar), show the command output; the error messages, etc, that might explain why it didn’t work.

You should at least have a reasonable understanding of pacman if completing the update in chroot. If you don’t then these should be helpful;

Regards.

This is incidental, but I note your BIOS hasn’t been updated in a very long time. It might be beneficial at some point to check the Gigabte site for the latest available.

Aside:- I had a Z68XP-UD4 many years ago, and there was an experimental (at the time) UEFI BIOS available. That might be a consideration.

Ok thanks for the advice, I’ll try being clearer and I’m happy to provide the output of any commands I need to enter.

So if I take Recovering from an interrupted update/upgrade as a starting point which has an update command this is what I get…

  1. I chroot with manjaro-chroot -a after confirming I have ext4
  2. I enter [ -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck ] && rm -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
  • There is no output
  1. I then enter pacman-mirrors -f && pacman -Syyu
  • I get this:

  1. I enter update-grub
  • No output from this either

The tutorial then says exit the chroot environment and reboot machine. After this I would expect it to boot up correctly, however after the grub bootloader screen it just seems to hang on a blank black screen. There is nothing on the screen, completely blank.

I try to get to TTY using Ctrl+Alt+F2, it doesn’t seem to do anything so I try with F3, F4, F5 and F6 with no difference.

I found a post where someone else had a blank screen and someone suggested going into grub and pressing e, and then replacing quiet with 3 and booting with F10. I don’t have the link but other responses say it worked for a few others. In my case however it did not work. I got a quick flash of some text before it hung up again. I repeated these steps again this time taking a video recording to see what it says. This is what it said:

running early hook [udev]
running hook [udev]
Triggering uevents...

It disappears after a split second and just stays on the black screen with no further output.

I really don’t know where to go from here :man_shrugging:

Hmm - difficult to say - something is weird with the info you posted - but I managed to extract some information

  1. a fairly only intel CPU providing integrated GPU using i915
  2. Nvidia gtx 980

I am guessing the Nvidia is somehow causing this.

If you edit the grub cmdline (you did it to remove quiet) and remove quiet and splash - and append the number 3, then use F10 to boot - you should be able to reach a minimal system.

From there you can login using your credentials.

The first thing to do is to rerun the sync process

sudo pacman -Syu

Please refer the recovery guide on foreign packages (AUR) [root tip] [recovery] Basic Manjaro Linux Recovery to remove any custom packages (AUR and the like).

Restart the system and check if this solved your issue.

What comes next is just thoughts - I have no idea if any of this is relevant.

Look into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and check if there is a configuration for nvidia - likely a symlink to a file in /etc/X11/mhwd.d/ and if I recall correct it is named 99-nvidia.conf.

As the intel i915 is usually working - you could move the nvidia configuration file to a backup e.g.

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-nvidia.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-nvidia.conf.bak

Then restart the system - be sure to move your output monitor to the intel gpu output - see if the removal of the Nvidia GPU can make your system boot.

There is several places where graphics and related stuff are configured.

In /etc/mkinitcpio.conf gpu modules may have been injected in the MODULES array and kms is likely referenced in the HOOKS array.

What to change and what to ignore I cannot say - I don’t know your system, I have no idea what is causing it.

Thanks.

I am struggling to get to this minimal environment.

I removed ‘quiet’ and put in the number 3 as I’ve mentioned but I do not see ‘splash’. I will attach images of what I see, maybe I’ve missed it.

Sounds to me like a hardware problem. Since Triggering uevents... searches /sys and triggers udev. Add loglevel=7 to the kernel parameter and remove quiet. Then you should see where it hangs exactly.

People do adopt differing variations of commands; for example, the procedure I use appears next, for reference; it’s a good idea to check for a lock file; this is what I do:

An update check might still be running in the background, and a db.lck file is created to prevent you from interfering with the currently running process.

Sometimes, the lock file isn’t removed gracefully.

1. Check whether a lock file exists;

lsof /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

If the output of the command is similar to:

  • lsof: status error on /var/lib/pacman/db.lck: no such file or directory

then the problem lies elsewhere.

2. If no output is returned at all, then a lock file likely remains set, and you can delete it with the following command:

sudo rm /var/lib/pacman/db.lck

Your update command output shows there is nothing to do which usually infers the update has completed, though it did note a warning abaut gnome-wallpapers which is likely nothing to be concerned about.

So, that tells me the updated files are likely OK, and the problem is elsewhere.

An updated ISO is now available for Manjaro 25.0.1.

It may be prudent to download and use this new ISO instead. While I don’t have information immediately available I suspect some changes related to the Nvidia driver were made.

As you will have noticed, “black screens” have been reported separately from your issue, so if the new ISO does address that issue, then it is likely better to use it, going forward.

Yes, that can allow one to reach a minimal system. This is useful if there isn’t a Manjaro ISO available to boot with, for example.

Again, I cannot reiterate this enough - we don’t know what damage you may have caused by peforming a hard shutdown before the sync/update completed. Because of this, all that can be done is to follow general troubleshooting steps in hopes that one of them will have success.

It’s important to note that a full reinstallation might ultimately prove to be the fastest option to return to a working system; though, the age of your (gen6) mainboard might present some difficulties. An updated BIOS might indeed be beneficial before a reinstall.

Your system is running kernel 6.12 (LTS) which is usually fine, however, given the age of the board and the lack of UEFI I’m wondering whether an older kernel might be more appropriate. This might be an important consideration if you should decide to reinstall your system.

Otherwise, at this time, I have nothing concrete to suggest.

Regards.

There has been no hardware changes, I am able to boot from ISO and my Windows drive boots up just fine too. As I’ve said I tried doing an update, the update window just closed itself, after a while I logged out, got a blank screen so decided to do a hard shutdown. So I would be surprised if the failed update caused a hardware issue.

I added the parameter as suggested but I can’t make sense of it. I can’t attach videos but I’ll attach a few frames just before it goes blank. It’s not easy to see though as everything moves too fast so appears all overlaid on top of each other. Thanks for the input.

Thanks again. Looks like the lock file doesn’t exist, the output is exactly as you posted it:

lsof: status error on /var/lib/pacman/db.lck: No such file or directory

I am using that exact ISO (25.0.1), I download it yesterday when I encountered this issue and using it to chroot.

The kernel you are referring to (6.12.25-1-MANJARO) is from the ISO I believe. I use 5.10 and have 5.4 as a backup.

Here is output of mhwd-kernel -li after chroot:

Currently running: 6.12.25-1-MANJARO (linux612)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux510
   * linux54

I will reinstall eventually at some point, but I’m not prepared for that yet. I have a lot of files and stuff, app configs, projects that need exporting out of an app, etc. I should be able to copy my home directory without issue with chroot, but not sure how I will export files and config from various applications. Maybe there is a way, I just don’t know about it. Which is why I really want to get my current installation up and running, so I can manually backup and export things, even if it’s in a half broken state.

Regarding my BIOS, yes I am aware that there are 2 updates available. One doesn’t sound like a major revision to what I already have, and the other is UEFI BIOS which is in beta and I’d rather not use it. However I will consider going from F6 to F7 before I do a full reinstall.

Most application configuration files are stored in your /home partition or directory; if you have a separate /home partition just avoid formatting that if you decide to reinstall (using manual settings in Calamares).

If just a directory in the / partition, copy it elsewhere. N.B. I’d recommend doing that anyway, before attempting a reinstall.

Thanks. Yeah it resides in the root partition so I will copy my home directory to an external drive.

Problem is some applications store things internally which need to be manually exported from the app.

Is it possible to run GUI apps in a chroot environment?

It will still be stored in your home directory. Any user application that stores its configuration anywhere else is badly designed and should not be used.

Technically, yes, it seems that this is possible (I’ve thought about this before) but it’s a convoluted process by the looks of it.

See the post above by @Aragorn re. application settngs and configurations, as he put it across more succinctly than I probably would have.

In a nutshell, any well-written application you install after doing a fresh OS installation, should pick up where you left off, so to speak, with the contents of your original /home restored (naturally, don’t forget the “hidden” .dotfiles !! These are the crucial part).

That being the case, your inxi output as it stands isn’t entirely useful. When you are able, please run inxi -zv8 from within a chroot environment.

It’s not practical to copy/paste the command output directly to the forum, however, you can pipe the output to a text file instead, like this:

inxi -zv8 > ~/my-inxi-output.txt

Then copy the whole file to a USB (for example) and copy/paste it from whatever computer you’re currently using to access the forum.

Yes, you can likely put that into motion while in chroot.

If you had the foresight to place /home as a separate partition when you initially installed, you likely won’t even need to move it’s content.

The trick is to use the manual formatting method and remember not to format /home - your files and most application specific settings would be found again by the new system, considering they are all stored under /home.

Of course any preferred system settings would need to be configured, and your applications themselves would need to be re-installed.

If /home is not on a separate partition, the entire content can still be copied to (an ext4 formatted) USB temporarily, and restored to the new /home after install.

There will likely be many who will be able to guide you through that; the following tutorial also has a few useful suggestions;

The latest non-Beta BIOS is recommended.

While I used the experimental UEFI BIOS myself (on my old Z68XP-UD4) without any issues, I imagine you’re comfortable with BIOS/MBR, so stick with what you know.

Oh yes I see now, I can just put the app folders back in .config or wherever they may be in my home directory and the new installation should just pick it up. Thanks!

I did run it from within a chroot environment. But I’ve just done it again and here is the output:

It seems I inadvertantly created more work for you than intended. What I should have suggested (and meant to suggest) was to enter a minimal system via Grub as you did before; but you tried that already and failed, which I had forgotten between sleeps.

Try running sudo mkinitcpio -P. Maybe fixed the problem.

I did run this, it generated them but didn’t solve the issue.
