I’m currently on a low end setup, it’s an old ThinkPad with integrated GPU and i5 processor, and most importantly only 4GB DDR3L RAM.
It’s completely enough for running the stable system, no problems anywhere.
I recieved 839 updates on stable branch, I started the update process in add remove software (GUI of pamac), it downloaded all, it ran all conflict checks, it did all checks like disk space it was doing last steps to update I think
And pamac crashed after like 177-180 something updates… due to low memory shortage.
And the Add Remove Software cannot be launched it gives memory shortage message, but after trying 10 ish times, it launched, everything has now gone black other than this window.
Is the update process running in background? Because it’s a bit laggy.
When add remove software finally launched, it displayed list of many many softwares to be updated, but when pressed apply, it have some kinda error.
I waited another few minutes, and now pressing apply first refreshed the AUR, (by the way I only have one or two softwares from AUR, and it’s not causing any problems in this case)
Then it just said nothing to do, and then it updated Opera Browser.
Then the software list I was seeing to be updated disappeared and it said system up to date
I hit refesh again, and it’s still synchronizing package databases for 5 minutes now…
And by the way the whole desktop is still black and I haven’t done anything.
I just wanna know if updates continue to process in background even if the GUI software crashes? Bc I think they all are done in bg.
And that you are correct - this would be a really, really bad idea. It is better to keep the system alive and work your way through manually.
Even so - it has been seen that having AUR enabled during update - can cause excessive memory load - causing the system to hang, if there is not sufficient swap available.
There is no golden rule for swap - even so some rules has been devised - based on experiences.
It is very important - make sure you have disabled AUR in Pamac preferences when executing an update.
Your desktop relies on the graphic drivers and may become unstable.
So the other option is to wwitch to a tty (e.g. CtrlAltF4, log in and use either
It’s certainly suggested to use the most current ISO available, whether for installation, rescue or as a general repair medium. However, another bootable ISO solution is generally recommended in 2025;
I have just restarted, and everything seems to be okay!
At first at SDDM login menu, it didn’t recognise my USB hub, so I had to connect my mouse and keyboard directly but after login, it worked fine!
Also it selected Hyperland by default for some reason at login screen, (I have never used Hyperland I installed it thinking it was just a tiling manager, but quickly realised it’s a whole DE, since then I’m using KZones script). The Plasma X11 seems to be removed, good thing that I already started using Wayland.
No issues with anything, no updates available, everything is functional as much as I can see…
