Turned off my pc in the middle of an update

I was in a hurry, my pc was updating and i turned it off, then when i turned it on again, i got this:

error: file `/boot/vmlinuz-6.6-x86_64’ not found.
error: you need to load the kernel first.

Also tried advanced boot options, same thing

Then i followed the steps on this topic

Mainly:

manjaro-chroot -a
pacman-mirrors -f && pacman -Syyu
uptade-grub

After that, when i booted into manjaro, it wodun’t even boot to grub and it would turn the pc off.

I got back on the live USB and ran:

sudo manjaro-chroot -a
pacman -S linux linux-headers
mkinitcpio -P

But, the last command wasn’t running (/etc/mkinitcpio.d/ was missing or something like that), so i did:

sudo pacman -S --overwrite linux

Then nkinitcpio worked and i did update-grub and booted back to the pc.

Grub didn’t show up and the login screen was difrent from usual

On the top-left, you can choose between x11 and wayland

Login-in with wayland will just freeze the screen, but with x11, you go to the loading screen, but there’s nothing but the blurry background.

Is it possible to fix this?

Welcome to the Manjaro Community!

Note that I removed your first image; please keep screenshots (and images in general) to a minimum as these take a lot of Forum bandwidth. Text is always preferable, where possible, and makes it searchable; whereas images are generally not. :slightly_smiling_face:

I guess this is just a typo (there are a few), but this:

First doesn’t need sudo; second is missing which Kernel you wish to (re-)install e.g.:

pacman -S linux66

… etc. :wink:

Headers should be pulled in if needed (not always, though) but you also want to add the series to the command i.e. linux66 (or linux612 if you want to try that).

What happens during the upgrade process is that, early on, the existing Kernel(s) are removed, then the replacements are installed at the end; therefore, if the upgrade process is interrupted during the installation phase, you will find yourself without a working Kernel and therefore in an unbootable state.

I’d also suggest having more than one Kernel available (at least one LTS, such as linux66 and/or linux612) on hand, plus maybe a HWE one such as linux614.

From your screenshot, it looks like it isn’t using the login screen (greeter?) theme you selected. You might need to re-set this in System Settings.

There’s no easy way in knowing what other damage might have been caused by your carelessness. :crying_cat_face:

Take some consolation in that you’re not the first, and probably won’t be the last. :smile_cat:

The following tutorial was designed for just such a scenario: you’ll need the latest Manjaro ISO:

After i ran pacman-mirrors -f && pacman -Syyu i got:

error: failed to synchronize all databases (invalid url for server)

May be due to untended .pacnew files? pacdiff -o :wink:

In particular, if you see pacman.conf.pacnew listed, this will cause an issue until it’s dealt with, since the community repo was removed at the beginning of the month.

Please always use;

pacman -Syu

(with one y and with sudo when needed) unless you are directed to do otherwise or unless you understand the ramifications of using any other variant of the command.

Did you run the command in the chroot environment; did you remember not to use sudo in chroot?

Please try again, but use the commands individually. Note that the --continent parameter might be more useful, depending where you happen to live;

pacman-mirrors --continent
pacman -Syu

You might also try using pamac with this command;

pamac update --force-refresh

Also provide the full command output of the commands, including any errors and warnings that might be presented.

Rather than telling us a command didn’t work, it’s better for members to actually see the result of a command.

I realise it might be difficult to produce the outputs as you go, but there’s usually a workaround, whether via TTY or directly piping the output to a text file.

In the meantime, there may also be other issues contributing. Please check the Known Issues and Solutions portion of the Update Announcements for possible workarounds.

Regards.

Nevermind, i forgot to connect to wifi before running that command. After i did it, it ran without errors :sweat_smile:

I did what the tutorial said, but i still cant boot. The login screen still isn’t the usual and its problem still persists

If the above commands are what you actually used, then there’s no wonder – the Grub configuration wasn’t updated.

Always triple-check your spelling when entering commands.

Please provide system information as indicated (below).

Keep in mind (as mentioned earlier) there’s no knowing the extent of possible damage caused. If the usual attempts to recover the system don’t work for you, then it’s very possible that a full re-installation might be in order. :eyes:

Please get into the habit of posting the output of commands you use (all of it) so others can immediately see a problem.

You can pipe the output to a text file if need be; for example, when performing an update:

pacman -Syu > ~/my-command-output.txt

(which, if entered correctly, will store the output text in that file).

Another thing you could try is (using the same tutorial as a basis);

Perform the same steps to enter a chroot environment, except instead of performing an update, do this instead:

install-grub

(which should completely replace Grub with the current version).

On the next boot you should immediately enter your BIOS and again select the Manjaro UEFI bootloader as the default (first in boot order).

Then exit the BIOS and reboot.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

Output of this command (formatted according to forum requirements) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Edit: specified command

More context is needed.

What does this refer to?
What command did you actually run?
You where in chroot when you did this?

You definitely need to reinstall at least one kernel - and then run the update again and let it finish.

I don’t think grub needs to be reinstalled - no reason why it would have been affected or removed by what you did (turning the machine off in the middle of an update).

The command for those erros was

install grub

And i was in chroot when i did it

Also i forgot to mention but i instaled linux66

I don’t think that is a valid command - not when your goal is to (re)install grub.
Why do you think it is?

look here:

GRUB/Restore the GRUB Bootloader - Manjaro

… two variants - one for Bios, one for UEFI systems

but as I said:

It’s a waste of time - this is not your problem …

I think that the problem is the display manager, is there any way to repair/reintall it?(im using kde plasma)

You can reinstall sddm (the display manager in Plasma). But probably more things are broken.
I would backup your valuable data and reinstall from a fresh ISO.

What makes you think that?
We can speculate here all day … with no concrete evidence (command output/result) there is nothing to go on.

Did you run:
pacman -Syu
from inside chroot?
Or, if the system does boot, from a TTY

Reinstalling it didnt work, im gonna reinstall it since this install probably is too damaged to be able to fix.

Also how can i backup my stuff with the system like that?

Your stuff is in your /home/your_username directory - copy it from there to somewhere else.

And that was a clear indication of how easily a typo will not produce the desired results. This time it was on me.

The actual command is;

install-grub

A bootable Manjaro Installer ISO is your friend.

As you intend to reinstall Manjaro you might also find this useful:
