Trouble with WiFi on laptop :intermittently turns off and must reboot; but now won't come on at all

After one of the updates a few months ago, the WiFi on my laptop started being automatically on when starting the system, which was not a problem but was different than before. Then it started to go off while working and the button would become unresponsive such that it would not turn on again unless rebooted. Now, it won’t come on at all.

I’m using the KDE desktop on an old HP G71. The output from journalctl -f is below. The SERVICE_START and SERVICE_STOP set of messages appear each time I press the WiFi button. The button seems to be sending a signal to the machine at least. After that output is the output from inxi -Fazy I have another machine exactly like this one (bought at the same time) running Windows 7 still and it can connect at this moment. Also a new machine running Windows 10 can connect at this moment.

I would’ve thought the WiFi hardware failed except that it starts working again sometimes on reboot; and will work fine again for a week or so before this happens again.

I don’t know enough to understand the significance of IF: wlp2s0 state: down other than it’s down and won’t connect.

Thank you for any guidance you may be able to provide.

The first thing I’d do would be to really rule out a hardware problem. Get a live system, preferably from a different OS (or, if you have dual boot, boot it), and test the card for quite some time. Also check if moving the laptop causes the card to stop working. You can also test it by passing it through to a VM.

If there isn’t a hardware problem, then you can start by downgrading concerned packages, namely drivers and Network Manager.

Hi @Gary1 ,
AFAIK from this post your card is supported by the linux kernel.
en:users:drivers:iwlwifi [Linux Wireless]
You could see that in the section 802.11bgn products at the end of the page.

I also provide a link to the Arch Wiki page where you can read how to try configure your card whether the signal is poor, disabling the n wireless band.
'Network configuration/Wireless - ArchWiki

At last, you can also search the forum in order to try to solve the problem. For example, this post is old but it could help you to find more posts like this.

Wifi on but no networks show in list

This post is from someone who try with a live cd.
Wifi Not working and no wifi network showing up

Hope it help, regards.’

Thank you very much. I’ll give these a try.

I don’t know what it means but I bought a Netgear Nighthawk A7000 to use for WiFi, assuming that the laptop WiFi card expired. After installing the kernel headers and adding the driver for the chipset in the A7000, the laptop’s WiFi has been working again without the A7000 connected. Don’t know if it is coincidence or not, but immediately after running the below (and rebootiing), it started working again and has since.

pamac install linux510-headers dkms
pamac build rtl8814au-dkms-git
