The system freezes for a while when turning on a video or when running a browser

After the update that was 05-03-2025, my Manjaro KDE Plasma system began to freeze for a while:

  • if a video player was open before;
  • if a tab was open in the browser where a video was playing or paused;
  • if open the audio in a browser or video player.

This problem does not appear immediately. For example, I turn on the computer in the morning, turn on background music on Youtube (in any browser). Then, in the evening or a little later, the system begins to freeze.
What do I do? For example, I pause the video and leave the computer for a few minutes.
Then I come back, turn on the video. The entire system freezes, but the sound plays. Only the picture freezes. Then, after 25 seconds (approximately), everything works fine.
I thought that this happened because of the kernel change to version 6.14. I deleted it and left 6.13rt5-3. But the same thing happens on this kernel.
When opening and starting to play a video in the VLC player, as well as Haruna, the same situation occurs. If I open an audio file, it also freezes. That is, it does not depend on the software (all browsers, all video players). However, in MPV (video player) this does not happen: both audio and video open without delay.
This problem can appear immediately after starting the PC, or after a few hours.
It is not clear what it depends on.
At the same time, the RAM is used at 40% maximum.
Disk activity is insignificant.

If I log out of the user profile or reboot the system, the system may not freeze for a while when playing video/audio.

After a restart, everything works fine again, up to the point when I am away from the computer for a while and the screen saver comes on or the monitors switch off. When I then reactivate the computer, the problem occurs. I have also noticed that I can no longer adjust the brightness of the monitors via Plasma. Restarting the computer is the only way to solve the problem temporarily.

Playing a lot of YouTube videos quickly starts to eat up RAM and start to invade swap; in your cases having very little (only 1G) and none at all. (Although in @Inko 's case, I’d expect it to take rather longer for RAM to become swamped).

I regularly have to restart the browser to free up RAM; periodic reboots are also required to clean out the rest.

I did try out a script posted elsewhere which is meant to clear out the cache, but haven’t got it to work for me yet.

When these freezes start to occur, check

free -h

and perhaps also

htop

↑ You might have to install this first but I, for one, much prefer it over the default top ↑

… and you might be surprised at the results.

Thanks for your reply, I’ll keep an eye on it the next time it occurs.

I’m just surprised that it never happened until the last update and I haven’t changed anything else on my system except that I switched from chrome to brave.

Thank you very much for your reply.
However, the freeze occurs not only in the browser and not only on the YouTube page. Any page containing audio or video in the browser can cause the freeze effect.
Also, regardless of the browser, when playing video or audio in the VLC player, Haruna - also freezes. But in mpv there is no such thing.
I described the situation in great detail. My RAM is not full. swap is used for some percentage and sometimes.

The reason I mentioned YouTube is that’s the site I mostly use; the same applies to other sites with embedded videos etc. which may use the same or a similar “engine” for video streaming.

Are these also streamed videos, rather than locally stored? Same for mpv?

Hello, I have now looked in journalctl during the existence of the error and have attached here all the messages that I bring in connection with the error.

I have also looked at the RAM, but it looks good, there is still enough free.

The error also occurs when I watch a video with VLC.

@Inko Looking at that last log, what I’d suggest is to turn off Screen Locking via System Settings; also in Power Management, set Suspend Session to “Do Nothing”.

@inverser It would be good for you to post the same. If the errors look like these, I’d suggest the same.

I can’t say for sure about YouTube. Most likely, we are talking about regular VP9/AV1 videos.
As for VLC and haruna, we are talking about local files.

Yes, intuitively, it seems to me too that this is somehow connected

Hello, under my energy settings it was already set to “do nothing” under “When inactive”. I only switch off my screens after the set time. See screenshot.

I’d suggest setting the first one to “Never” rather than 15 min. and see what happens.

I’ve encountered (but not documented, silly me) a case where I had to select a different option, in order to switch back and actually use the option in a Manjaro GUI window. The underlying reason was that the previously selected option no longer existed, and the “Inactive” button was automatically selected in the GUI, blocking me from actually setting it to “Inactive”.

So as BG405 mentioned, it might be worthwhile to switch the energy settings to something else, and then back to “do nothing”.

I have had this before as well.

In addition; sometimes, after an update (particularly a major one, as with the Plasma6 upgrade some time back) one has to log-out of Plasma to do such updates and clear out the old cache/config etc,

It’s often recommended to do upgrades whilst completely logged out of your Plasma GUI and use a TTY instead for the process.

Oh ah uhm, just noticed, I experienced this on XFCE :grinning:

By the way, after this error happened, I can’t enter the power saving settings

Try:

systemctl --user restart plasma-powerdevil

The good news is that, on my Testing branch system, a lot of the powerdevil crashing issues that I was having on Plasma 6 seem to have been fixed in 6.3.3. So, hopefully 6.3.3 isn’t too far away from Stable. In my case, it was crashing every time my system put itself to sleep (but not when I manually put it to sleep). So I had to frequently run the above command to get my brightness settings back. Hopefully it should do the same for your power settings.

You can check the status of the powerdevil service by running:

systemctl --user status plasma-powerdevil

works for me too, thanks
