System freezing - intermittent

Been running Manjaro for about 2 weeks now - very happy with it (was using Mint so took a couple days to adjust, but now I am very happy to be on it).

However - for the past week or so - the system just freezes up on me… requires a hard-poweroff to clear.

Thought it was RAM- but memtests and even swapping RAM cards didn’t help.

It ‘feels’ like it is graphics related… I am on an older machine (HP-Elitebook 8560w workstation with a Radeon HD 6730m display controller.

It also seems to only freeze when I’m using my browser(s) (firefox/librewolf) - (I’ve disabled hardware acceleration). But about all I use is my browser so tough to say it is related. Also, if it just sits, even with multiple apps open - it doesn’t freeze…

I am considering a fresh install of Manjaro - as the first week I had no issues - so I wonder if my toying around caused some type of issue. I did try installing a touchpad synaptics driver - …

I don’t see anything in the logs. I’ve tried swapping kernels,

So - any ideas of what to try?

Is there a way I can ‘refresh’ my install w/o a fresh install? (wiping my drive?)

Hi @LuigiCalamar,

Best way to troubleshoot will be inspecting the logs. So please provide the output for:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --no-pager

Where:

  • The --boot paramater is of how many boots ago your computer hung. So -1 for the previous boot, -2 for the one before it, and so on and so forth;
  • the --priority=3 argument will just output all Errors and Warnings that occurred;
  • the --no-pager argument will print/show/output the output from being paginated, making it better for posting to the forum.

When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

Well that doesn’t tell me, or anyone really much. Try without the --priority argument:

journalctl --boot=-1 --no-pager

Also, a tip:

VMX is the extension for virtualization. That doesn’t say anything about your problem.

Hmmm…

Try with another kernel. Version `5.15`` since it’s the latest LTS:

mhwd-kernel --install linux515

If successful, boot into it, by restarting your computer and, while it’s starting up, pressing the Shift and Esc alternately until the grub selection screen shows. Use the Up and/or Down keyboard buttons to navigate to the Advanced… option. Enter it by pressing Enter, select kernel 5.15 and press Enter To boot into it.

See if that works. Uninstall the other kernel:

mhwd-kernel --remove linux518

That kernel is EOL (end of life). Upgrade to the next stable one 5.19 or stay on the latest LTS kernel: 5.15

Judging by the BIOS date:

I would recommend the LTS Kernel, since you use the radeon driver and not the amdgpu driver:

did you have freezes also on mint?
you could be running out of RAM… did you monitor ram usage?
you have kde, so did you disable baloo? go to system settings/file search and uncheck all options there, click apply

Disabled the search options as recommended.

This is a different laptop than what I am running Mint on… I haven’t used it in a while as it was running an old WIN7… and since it is pretty ‘beefy’ - thought it could operate as a ‘desktop replacement’. (it is heavy and cumbersome - but pretty powerful).

I have 24gb RAM - I rarely see any indication I’m even approaching 8gb usage. Note that I did remove the add’l 16gb (2x8 cards) - and ran it for a while on just the 8gb it came with - same issues - no better, no worse.

I am concerned it could be hardware related also - since its an older machine and seems so intermittent. That said - all disk/memory scans are clean.

What might there be in the profile that may cause an issue???

… if I want to start ‘rebuilding’ this profile - for usage - are there things I should avoid bringing over? (e.g.: browser user.js/prefs.js, extensions, etal?)

How about app settings?

WOuld it make sense to remove my old profile (assuming things stay stable?)
