After updating , GRUB never shows up for me on my BIOS machine (not running UEFI), I just boot into a black screen with no error messages.
I was able to boot into an older installation fine.
I also chrooted in and reinstalled grub, but no luck.
I’m not really sure what to try next.
Here’s the output of inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
after chrooting into the system:

Here’s some more clarification on the setup/situation
The drive which I am trying to boot from is /dev/sdb.
The old manjaro installation is on /dev/sda2
I have luks on /dev/sdb2, with lvm for root, and boot on /dev/sdb1
I haven’t had any issues (to my knowledge) with the encryption/etc., I just can’t get grub to load installed on /dev/sdb
Thank you for any assistance! Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide that would be helpful.

As you have a BIOS machine and everything checks out, can you install GRUB to the MBR of both hard drives and try booting the other one???
I will try. I will update once it is done.

I was able to put grub on my other drive (sda) with a menuentry for my install on (sdb2). It boots fine when I do that. I am trying to reinstall grub again on sdb now that I am on my system not chrooted.

STOP!
Please provide a:
smartctl --all /dev/sdb
first because if it didn’t work the first time, your HDD might be dying.

Well… You have a BIOS machine, just set the default to boot from SDA, boot from there and then provide another full inxi when booted but you have 1 solution already!

Using the other configuration’s header it boots fine from sdb. So that’s where the problem seems to be. Here’s another inxi while booted.

But it seems that the problem is some change in the grub.cfg header.

Therefore, I’ve marked this answer as the solution to your question as it is by far the best answer you’ll get.
As you have a BIOS machine and everything checks out, can you install GRUB to the MBR of both hard drives and try booting the other one???
However, if you disagree with my choice, please feel free to take any other answer as the solution to your question or even remove the solution altogether: You are in control! (If you disagree with my choice, just send me a personal message and explain why I shouldn’t have done this or or if you agree)
P.S. In the future, please don’t forget to come back to your question after your issue has been solved and click the 3 dots below the answer to mark a solution like this below the answer that helped you most:
so that the next person that has the exact same problem you just had will benefit from your post as well as your question will now be in the “solved” status.
Last piece of advice and unrelated to your issue, but please read this too!

In the grub.cfg
Before it was generating the following in part of the header (the rest of the header is the same):
if loadfont unicode ; then
set gfxmode=auto
load_video
insmod gfxterm
set locale_dir=$prefix/locale
set lang=en_US
insmod gettext
fi
terminal_input console
terminal_output gfxterm
Whereas now instead is:

font=unicode
else
insmod lvm
insmod ext2

I’m not sure what changed, but replacing it with the old header fixed the issue.
Thank you again for all the assistance!

Keep a backup of that!
BIOS machines are getting rare these days so don’t get as much testing as UEFI machines!!!
