Suddenly, the icons in dash disappear and pc stops responding correctly

I’ve been using manjaro gnome for a few month and it works almost perfeclty because i’m facing this issue randomly:

Suddenly, the icons in dash disappear even if it keeps displaying the running indicator, like this:

Mod edit:- Please avoid posting unnecessary images.

I’m using dash to panel, but it also happens with the regular dock without the extension.

Also when this happens, i can no longer open apps, in fact, if i try to open the apps that running, they close immediately and i’m not able to open new apps, it keeps displaying the desktop environment but it is useless.

If i leave the pc alone for a few minutes, the screen turns black and does nothing(neither shuts down nor restarts) and if i quick press the power button it shows this:

Mod edit:- Please avoid posting images of textual content when a brief description will suffice. Transposing the information to text and posting in a preformatted text box is also an option. Like this;

?? [1841]: (msg) caught signal, shutting down...

??" [1841]: (msg) ModemManager is shut down

Now, that information is searchable, and others can copy/paste portions if needed to search for possibly related information.

In future, images may be deleted without warning.

So i have to hold down the power button to turn it off.

I tried to open terminal with ctrl+alt+f3 to restart gnome-shell from terminal but i’m not able to type anything in the console, So i have to hold down the power button to turn it off.

This message also appeared when i tried to save something in sublime text:

failed: Neither /usr/bin/gksudo nor /usr/bin/pkexec are available

And i wasn’t able to see the files in nautilus, also this message appeared:

Error when getting information for file ‘/home/user/downloads’: Input/output error

I ran smartctl for the disk and i got this:

It’s possible your ISO was damaged in transit. You could try downloading a fresh ISO and verifying it against the checksum file (also provided on the download page).

Of course, that is only one possibility among many.

I’m sure someone will help further when they are able.

Regards.

I note the following

  • dual boot windows
  • manjaro uses btrfs

btrfs is a filesystem which is gaining a lot of momentum due to the features it provides.

Upon filesystem damage, btrfs will lock the file system, to prevent further damage.

To recover you will need to boot from a live system. Please see Basic Manjaro Linux Recovery for instructions on how to reach the damaged filesystem.

Then see the relevant sections on Manjaro Wiki

See → Btrfs - Maintenance
See → Btrfs - Solving Problems

Thanks, i can access to manjaro after restarting the pc but i’ll check the links. I guess i need a live cd to repair the filesystem.

Update:
It happened again and tried to reboot it with REISUB, it failed but it show me a few new messages:

Mod edit:- Image removed.

Yes, the Manjaro ISOs live environment will no doubt be useful; make sure to check the ISO for consistency against the checksum file.

If you’re not already using Ventoy as a bootable ISO solution, you might give it some serious consideration. I recently authored a guide on how to create a Ventoy USB which you will likely find useful.

The following tutorial might also be helpful;

Please provide logs rather than photos of the screen;

journalctl --boot=-1 --no-pager

The -1 will produce logs from the last boot, -2 from the one before, and so on.

Regards.

The output is large, like 700Mb, is there anything i can do to reduce the log?

These should help;

This seems unlikely, but I suppose not impossible.

Generally logs can be pasted to the forum in a preformatted text box, but if it is particularly long, perhaps a pastebin type service would be more practical.

Thanks for your help, i followed the steps in the links you shared, but everything seems to be correct with filesystem and disk :confused:, also checked the ram, here are the logs:

Since the NVME is ok and the filesystem is fine,I would say it is this kind of issue:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Solid_state_drive/NVMe#Controller_failure_due_to_broken_APST_support

Thanks, i downgraded from kernel 6.14.0-1 to 6.12.21-4 and it seems to be working, no crashes yet. If it happens again, i’ll try disabling apst.
