Stuck on emergency shell with kernel 6.7 - I got it (i think)

Iupdated my system with the last stable update without any issue, my kernel was still version 6.6.19. I rebooted and i was able to do whatever as usual.

Then, i installed kernel 6.7.7 with Manjaro tools, as i always do. Just after rebooting, i get the following message in a black screen right after grub menu :

ERROR: resume: hibernation device 'UUID=<uuid the swap file location> not found
mount: /new_root: can’t find UUID=<uuid of my root partition>
ERROR: Failed to mount ‘UUID=<uuid of my root partition>’ on real root
You are now being dropped intoan emergency shell.
[rootfs ~]#

At this point i do not know what to do, it’s like my ssd is not detected anymore.

Note: i do not have plymouth installed. Also surprisingly, as I had a nvidia GPU, i did not notice any big size diffrence with initramfs-6.6-x86_64 and initramfs-6.6-x86_64-fallback

I could rollback to the most recent btrfs snapshot with kernel 6.6.19, that is why i can write this topic.

Below is the inxi data with my current kernel 6.6.19, not the 6.7.7

inxi -v7azy

What could be the issue ? Thank you

check your /etc/fstab - from the message you referenced look like text instead of uuid

Hi,

There is literally no difference in /etc/fstab between the subvolume i installed kernel 6.7 on and the previous btrfs snapshot with kernel 6.6. Thus, there is only UUID inside. :cold_sweat:

Is the system encrypted?

Could it be the file /etc/openswap.conf which is not written correctly?

My system is not encrypted at all.

I did a mkinitcpio -P right now with kernel 6.6, there are “missing firmware”, but they are there since years literally, but maybe it causes troubles now with 6.7 :

==> Starting build: '6.6.19-1-MANJARO'

No - these warning lines only has meaning if you expect the module to be present - otherwise not.

In your opinion, is it normal that initramfs-6.6-x86_64 and fallback did not grow up because of my nvidia gpu ?
I did not apply the kms hook and i did not see any big size difference, not the 150+ Mo as Philip told us.

I don’t know

But I do think the location of your swapfile may create issues

If it causes issues, it’s new with 6.7, it always has been there.

What i tried to do when i get grub menu, type “e”, and delete resume=UUID=e9bdab9b-c172-4b6f-875f-610249007c0e resume_offset=3741018,

But it does change anything then, i still got the message starting with mount: /new_root: can’t find UUID=<uuid of my root partition>

A shot in the dark: did you do something to your disk? Repartitioning? Or maybe it has something to do with that warning about the enclosure of the 4th disk, maybe it was a warning on 6.6 and it become an error on 6.7. Or maybe you updated the firmware with some windows tool? That could change the uuid…

Finally, i think i know what the issue is.

I reinstalled Manjaro on a brand new nvme device. It works fine with kernel 6.6 lts, 6.7 or 6.8.

Now, I obtain exactly the same issue if I mount the partitions of my former ssd (a Crucial one) in fstab with kernel 6.7 or 6.8. I end up on an emergency shell. But no issue if I switch to kernel 6.6.

It is possible that since 6.7 my ssd is not recognized anymore by the kernel ? it’s almost 10 years old.

Thanks

Upstream patch ata: ahci: Do not apply Intel PCS quirk on Intel Alder Lake - kernel/git/libata/linux.git - libata development tree solved this issue.

My SATA devices are now detected again, this is an issue with Alder Lake intel cpu.
