Steam doesn't start, says trouble connecting to steam servers

Hello there, since I updated the system yesterday my steam keeps saying that I have no internet when I clearly do, I tried some things from ArchWiki - Steam/Troubleshooting but it still doesn’t work, also tried seeing if something was blocking it but nothing came to mind since I didn’t change anything and it worked yesterday.

Before you get all the same tips and solutions, can you specify what you have tried?

Hi @Tractor,

Could you please provide the output of

ping -c 4 8.8.8.8

as well as

ping -c 4 google.com

and

traceroute steampowered.com

I don’t know if it’s causing the problem, but it does seem that there is some kind of DNS resolution problem.

Hello, I tried:
Steam fails to start correctly: steam-runtime --reset
Also the Missing libc because it said something about that which it doesn’t say anymore so I assume it fixed it.

A thing to try:
Rename your ~/.steam/ folder to something other then ~/.steam/ and see if that fixes it. If that fixes it there is something corrupt in there. Trash the old folder and start again. steam will download all your stuff. There might be some save files there? careful with trashing if you miss something.

Thank you.

Seeing as these all seem fine and doesn’t have a problem, it would seem your steam client is for some reason not able to utilize your internet connection. Questions to ask now:

  • Did it work?
  • Did something change?
  • If so, then what?

The reason I’m asking, is to me it looks like a proxy server was suddenly configured for steam, and it can’t use that.

I don’t really know any more than what I’ve just mentioned, but that is what it looks like to me, from here.

Edit: Just realised that in the first line of the log the folder for steam is in ~/.local/share/Steam
I renamed that folder and got this output:

Did it work?

A: It worked before (yesterday) but now it’s just saying that I have no internet.

Did something change?

A: I updated the system yesterday with sudo pacman -Syu

If so, then what?

A: Most likely either steam or it’s dependency updated which broke it, still don’t know what or why.

Hi, so I did:

try completely removing steam-runtime dir from the same folder in ~/.steam/steam/ubuntu12_32 and in ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32

steam --reset

and launching again.

from the second link and also after that reinstalled steam with sudo pacman -S steam and it still doesn’t work, also I’ve tried reinstalling the nvidia driver and the 32 bit version of it but I still get:

Since steam complains that the error is from client-download.steampowered.com I tried putting it in two ‘is it down’ type of websites and both of them say that it is down so it seems that it’s valve’s fault but that still doesn’t make sense because wouldn’t there be more people with this issue then?
Is maybe the link it’s trying to reach wrong?

After witch the client starts so I assume it has nothing to do with drivers or libraries.

Maybe there is some DNS issue as @Mirdarthos mentioned, or a steam/akamai problem.
Those can be hard to solve since you can’t do anything about that. The DNS resolves to a few servers, yours might differ depending on your location.

Do you have a DNS resolver running locally or a pihole running of some kind?

Hi, so I do have the same servers that the DNS resolves to, same IP adresses.
I’ve tried pinging all of the addresses and none of them returned anything, 100% packet loss to them.
I don’t have any pihole, and I didn’t touch any DNS settings anywhere so every part of my network should be on default including my pc.
The router I’ve restarted and steam still says no internet.

Another thing to try: make a new user, log in with that user, start steam to check if it is something of the user or the system.

I changed to a new account and it also didn’t work, it didn’t even give me a popup to enter my email and password. It just showed a popup with steam saying that a connection can’t be made.

I’m kinda out of solutions, you might have other issues besides steam since there are some weird things in the log, maybe a partial update or a package that conflicts
