[Solved] Fresh installation has poor performance

Hello. I have installed Manjaro on my desktop alongside win10 and it has low performance in some apps:

  • Firefox scrolling is very slow; when scrolling a web-page in Firefox, htop sometimes shows up to 80% load of a core;
  • Sometimes SMPlayer freeze system including GUI while sound is still playing;
  • Qt Creator quiet slow but compiling simple app seems fast;
  • Sometimes xfce4-terminal opens with 0.5-1 sec delay;
  • Sublime Text 3 scrolls very slow.

During installation Microsoft EFI partition was of unknown type so I created additional partition and edited efibootmgr to have Manjaro bootloader first, partitions are:
/dev/sda1 - MS reserved partition
/dev/sda2 - Win10
/dev/sda3 - EFI partition created with “boot” flag and mounted in /boot/efi
/dev/sda4 - /
/dev/sda5 - /home

Hello @mankoon :wink:

This could be related to the gpu driver (acceleration) or you have not much RAM. In case you have not much RAM no swap is there:

That results in slow scrolling and system freezes if the RAM is full. However 16GB RAM should be enough…

It is always good to have at least a swapfile active with some space (about 512MB, 16GB*1.5=24GB are recommend).

What says?

free -h

Also Kernel 5.9 is EOL and already dropped. Switch to 5.10 or stay on 5.4. https://www.kernel.org/

Hi,
I updated kernel to 5.10.7-3, but problems persisted.

free -h
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:           15Gi       1,0Gi        13Gi       101Mi       845Mi        14Gi
Swap:            0B          0B          0B

I’m not loading my RAM with anything.
How can I check GPU driver?

@mankoon

I guess it is this problem with older GPUs:

Seems to persist in 460xx according to your experience.

Thanks!
I switched to nouveau and it’s become much better.
