Short cut for Find behavior in Kate

I asked this yesterday but deleted it shortly thereafter, thinking perhaps I was nuts since it was about 3 AM at the time; but, today, I got to a machine that wasn’t yet updated for the most recent round to confirm the old behavior. Stable branch.

Previous behavior:
If in vertical split view, when Ctrl+F the search menu appears for the side the cursor is in—the side having the focus. And if click back in the main window text (leaving the search menu open) and Ctrl+F again, the text in search menu is selected and gets the focus, such that one can type and replace it easily for a new search. Works the same regardless of which panel of the split has the focus and each panel has its own instance of the search menu.

New behavior:
If repeat the above when cursor is in the left panel of the vertical split, the second time Ctrl+F the seearch menu closes and if Ctrl+F to open it, it opens but for the right-hand panel. That is, the focus moves from left panel to right panel from multiple Ctrl+F without ever selecting the other panel.

Am I doing something stupid? Is there a setting I can change to return the behavior to the way it was?

It’s not very important but seems wrong and is a bit challenging to unlearn.

Thank you.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. Are you saying that pressing CtrlF three times switches the focus from the left pane to the right pane? :thinking:

On my system here, pressing CtrlF opens a common search bar underneath both panes. Pressing it a second time or a third time does nothing — the search bar remains open — and the focus remains in the selected pane.

@Gary1 From the kate menu, you can view all keyboard shortcuts at :

Settings -> Configure Keyboard Shortcuts

From here, you can even reset all shortcuts to restore the default behaviour.

Thanks. Yes, that is correct. There is one search bar but if you type something in it, then it toggles when each pane has the focus such that each pane can have its own search term(s). But if the left pane has the focus and the search menu is already open and I Ctrl+F then the search menu shows the term(s) from the right pane and the right pane gets the focus, at least the search is performed in the right pane.

As I work, I keep ending up in the wrong pane. That’s what was happening yesterday such that I could repeat the Ctrl+F steps described and see the focus change to the other pane. I tried looking at the configuration settings and only found where the key strokes could be changed but not the behavior.

I had two different Kate sessions open, one each on different desktop views, and one works normal and the other as described. I closed and re-opened it and now both are working normally.

Perhaps, I’m hitting the wrong keys some where and changing the behavior? My guess is that as I work for the next few hours, the behavior will change again; and it’s probably something I’m doing. For example, I used to miss the S in Ctrl+S and hit the W, which would close the file; but once I finally figured out what was taking place I turned that off.

I think you’ve answered your own question. :wink:

Maybe. Sure enough, the behavior is back to that weird changing the focus again; but I’ve no idea yet what I could possilbly be keying to cause that.

Another odd thing I’ve noticed is that when saving or undoing or something in that area of keys via Ctrl, the character ß will appear in the text. I cannot reproduce it. It’s happened at least ten times over the past couple weeks but I cannot make it happen. I’m writing in English and that looks like Greek Beta. I have to press Ctrl + Alt + G to switch to Greek keyboard and I can’t see me doing that by accident. Or maybe I’m just losing it altogether.

I can create that character in my Belgian keyboard layout by pressing AltGrS. “ß” is the alternative spelling for a double “s” in the German language.

That must be it. It took me awhile to get it to work but I have to first press and release the key tha looks like a windows key and then AltGr andS twice quickly. Then I get the double “s”. But I can’t get that to change the Find behavior.

This seems to have been reported before;
a regression?

Also on KDE Discuss (recently):

I could guess that several reports I’ve noticed might have a common root cause. Probably it’s best to do a little more actionable research; and report to KDE directly:

Not the exact same issue; for the first report has to do with selecting Next and the other appears to be about selecting files.

If you have search terms in both menus (left and right panes) and set focus to the left pane and CtrlF the search menu shows the right pane’s search terms and the right pane is searched. If do the same from the right, it does not move focus to the left.

It’ll do so in one file tab, but not another. Maybe I’ll stumble on to why exactly at some point if it’s really some key I’m hitting; but are there really any keys one can press and alter such behavior normally?
