Screen tearing and flashing black screen

Dunno which sub forum to shove this in but since I’m on XFCE desktop I’ll use this one.
Was playing Dragon Quest Builders 2 (in windowed mode) when my screen suddenly went black, briefly flashed the expected screen but with tearing, still was enough for me to get to the misc menu, the next instance was enough for the save menu and the instance after that enough to actually save. What would I look for log wise to provide devs?

Edit: btw after I saved my game I rebooted the PC to reinitialise the screen and it’s drivers

Edit 2: As for kernel version it’s latest LTS 6.18.33-1

Edit 3: Why did admin edit the “[crtical bug]” out of my title? It absolutely qualifies as a critical bug since I was forced to force shutdown my PC (by the physical button) and reboot. It may have even caused data corruption. Whether it counts as a security bug I don’t know but something that rips through the display is absolutely a critical bug.

Edit 4:
since @linux-aarhus brought it up I’ll link the other issue here now that it’s solved and can be removed from scope of this thread: KeePassXC won't load
Link is merely for reference, whatever the underlying cause is/was it no longer stops keepassxc from booting, at least for the time being. For this thread I want the focus to remain on diagnosing the cause of the screen issues, whether it was related to the keepassxc issue and the waterfox issue or not remains undetermined but assumed unrelated for now.

Start with providing inxi -zv8. Formatted as code (the </> button and then paste between the 3 ticks).

Did you tried switch to TTY with crtl+alt+F3 or F4 and switching back with crlt+alt+F1?

You can also activate REISUB to evade data corruption with Magic System Hotkey function.

You can also try to switch between other Proton versions.
In steam you can switch to another Proton Version: Properties from Steamgame>compatibility

Outside from steam, i heared that you can also use ProtonUp.

Do you experience this problems in other games?

No I didn’t try switching tty, my gut reaction was to try and save then force shut down in case it was some malware trying to make use of that copy fail or something (already applied the changes suggested in the main thread the devs made a day or 2 after it was made - when I found out about the issue)

Could it be related to your other issues where incomplete files is causing applications to fail?

This happened before those issues started cropping up. I do have another desktop related issue but that’s of a different nature. In that one it’s only shown up while using waterfox (might happen in other browsers/apps I dunno but waterfox is my daily). It starts by waterfox suddenly shutting down and random icons in systray and start menu just start disappearing when I hover my mouse over them. Since I’ve started recognising it I just reboot the whole pc by force (which had yet to happen on the day I had this issue) so for now, I expect that’s unrelated.

edit: if the waterfox related issue is somehow related to this one then I can only class the bug as a kernel one and in the gfx driver probably. that said as my system is all amd I have doubts that’s it. perhaps a compositor bug? but what kind of compositing bug could display such drastically different symptoms? I still have my doubts about them being related so again, treating them separately for now.

since the fsck was done with a liveusb I was unsure if it was going to reveal anything, sure enough doing it on the drive whilst it was mounted yielded some results, did in readonly mode though so I could check what should actually be addressed here and what is ignorable (if anything)

Mod edit:- Manjaro does not have a “Start Menu”.

Never ever run fsck on a mounted filesystem. It can lead to damage.

Couldn’t be helped, it’s where / lives and doing it when it wasn’t mounted revealed nothing. I figured since it was readonly mode it would at least would not damage anything whilst still revealing any actual issues that doing so on a liveusb did not. What to do from this point however I have no clue as I do not want to try repairing it while the system is using it.

tried that pamac reinstall ... trick on pulseaudio because my systray could not connect to it and neither could I adjust my volume. turned out something removed it from my system without my consent. I’m assuming pipewire and something to do with it but I’ll start a separate thread for that if need be later

It seems you have multiple missing files from multiple packages…either a interrupted update or some filesystem damage. Isn’t it easier to reinstall?

Maybe, but for now things are working. This thread was only started so I could try to hunt down enough info that devs could fix the root cause (which is presumably their end). Even if it’s not that the devs need to do something it would still be good for me to learn how to get diagnostics ready for if and when I encounter an issue with my display that actually is for them to fix. Still haven’t gotten round to playing DQB2 again to see if my save corrupted though

Given that steam was somehow uninstalled I’m starting to think something caused a rm -f /* on me, if so that would explain a lot, though the question is how did it get into root mode to touch even packages?

Mod edit: Consecutive posts merged.

I have no idea (as said common cause is interrupted update) but FYI that rm above would have caused you to not have an OS at all, and there is actually an additional safety mechanism since several years so that it doesn’t actually work (exactly like this).
Just a fun fact.

Unfortunately i am not a gamer anymore and i cannot help with specific game and video problems.
I only know there is a known bug in the current mesa but it was reported to affect only some old intel cards.

Found out about journalctl so I started going through what it shows me for yesterday, I found this so far:

Don’t know whether that 1d in my OG post refers to when I posted or when was last edited so haven’t been able to narrow down the time range further yet

Been throwing the issue at google gemini (because trying to read that log was not getting me anywhere). That eventually lead to the possibility it was my usb sound card not getting enough power. I have it plugged in despite the gfx card being perfectly capable of handling sound because the device has an audio dial on it that makes controlling my volume so much easier. I’ll look into getting a shorter cable to see if that resolves the issue since it’s likely a distance issue with how long the cable is.

edit: could neither find mini usb (yes it’s that old a device) cables nor sound dials in my local shops, even tried argos and specialty stores but natta, nothing, none, **** all. So for now I’ve unplugged the device, shift my headset’s jacks to the sockets on top of my pc and setup CTRL+LOGO++ / CTRL+LOGO+- to control my volume with so we’ll see if the display issues stop. I’ll try to pop in daily for a week and if the waterfox related issues stop then it’s probably a safe bet that the one that occured in the display manager while I was playing DQB2 will probably not happen again.

Edit 2: The usb sound card stopped giving that clock error after I switched it’s mode. There’s a toggle button underneath that I forgot about and it says U2 on 1 side, U1 on the other, it’s now in U1 mode. So as far as that’s concerned it’s no longer an element that could cause the screen issue if it comes back, for now though I think it’s safe to say it was indeed the cause as I’ve yet to have that issue with waterfox since unplugging it originally. I only plugged it back in after I found a spare mini usb cable in storage that was shorter so would also resolve the speed of power delivery issue that may have been a problem. That said I don’t recall what the U1/U2 thing was about so I will have to look that up

Edit 3: Wasn’t what I was looking for but device details here:
https://www.upcindex.com/5026686127867

Unless they’ve changed it, that only applies to / itself. The glob pattern /* will list everything in / so the safety won’t work.

For anyone else hitting similar issues, it’s also worth checking the refresh rate settings after a driver or kernel update, since I’ve seen those get changed unexpectedly and cause flickering or tearing.

The waterfox issue decided to rear it’s ugly head. Tried checking the log straight after the reboot to see what could be gleaned and nope, natta. Gonna go to be after this so take your time if you need to:
