Samsung T5 SSD, how to mount?

Hi,

I just received my Samsung T5 SSD. It is not mounted automatically, unfortunately. I tried a lot of things on my own to mount it manually, but I don’t know how. I even don’t know if it is actually possible and supported.

Anyone can help me with this? lsubs does list the device. fdisk -l does not.

How can I mount this device?

Does the partition manager of the GUI recognize the usb ssd ?

Hello @Aqm ,

normally there is no filesystem on a new ssd/hdd. And without filesystem and partition table there is nothing to mount.

Did you build a partitiontable, partition and filesystem on your new drive?

If not you can use the program ‘gparted’ for it.

@kisun thanks, good suggestion. I just opened gparted. I only see my internal HD with its partitions. I cannot choose the external SSD in the devices list. I tried refreshing the list ofcourse. I Also tried another USB port.

@Keruskerfuerst would that be gparted? Or…?

Yes, for example.

Sorry I overread the ‘portable’. Then portable devices are still pre formatted. Mostly with ‘ntfs’. But preformatted or not it should be in device list.

@kisun ok what can I do when it is not listed? I also tried things with gvfs-mtp which apparently stands for media transfer protocol. It has something to do with Android hardware, which this SSD supports.

Should this be able to work? Or should I return it for a supported SSD? I am clueless at the moment.

Hi @Aqm, and welcome!

Please provide the output for:

sudo lsblk

@Mirdarthos hi!

aqm@aqm /> sudo lsblk

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it

Try the same command again but plug the portable ssd into another usb port.

Also for this command, the moment after it has been plugged in:

sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 50

I tried

  • 2 usb ports on the laptop itself
  • 1 usb C port on the laptop itself
  • 1 usb port on my docking station

I checked lsblk every time, I don’t see any difference.
The last log is like this.

Yeah, I anticipated on that on my last post. But here it is as a whole.

Well, now you’ve made me say it. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve never used diff before, so not really no.

I’m pretty sure the problem is your USB port. The device is not properly detected. Some Samsung devices are known to not be 100% compatible with the specs. You could try kernels before 5.10.
