Samba: Unable to login with Dolphin

I have a samba share on an Unraid NAS device running separate from the PC running Manjaro.

Within Manjaro, I can navigate in the Dolphin GUI to the smb share successfully. It shows up under the “Remote” section as expected.

I have security settings on the smb share. You have to log in with a user/pass in order to have read/write access. Otherwise access is read only.

Given this, my access to the share in Manjaro/dolphin is read-only. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect with my user/pass.

I’ve tried to put my username/password in the URL for the samba share, by right clicking, going to “Edit” and updating the “Location” field in Dolphin to add my user/pass to the samba URL. Doesn’t do anything.

Haven’t been able to find anything under system settings. I checked the ArchWiki, but the samba guides seems to be based around how to set up samba on Manjaro, not how to log into a remote samba share with KDE Plasma.

Anyway, I would appreciate any help! This one has thrown me a for a loop.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

  3. What is the output of:

    smbclient --list=NAS-NAME --no-pass

Where obviously NAS-NAME is the name or IP address of your NAS

Hi Fabby! Ty so much here’s the information below. I will post the inxi system output, follow by the smbclient.

SMB1 disabled -- no workgroup available

You never configured the Samba client and a while ago SMB1 got disabled because of some serious security issues.

So create a config file and add to the [global] section client min protocol = NT1 if and only if you cannot upgrade your NAS to SMB2.

OR

Upgrade your NAS ASAP and if it would be advertising its shares to the Internet turn that off right now before you do anything else!!! ¹

After the upgrade, set your NAS to use SMB2 or better: SMB3!

Note 1: Yup, even if you have passwords set because that’s the issue: passwords can be circumvented!

:scream:

Ty so much Fabby! Investigating this now w/ my NAS OS.

Fix:
Turns out you don’t connect to your SMB share in Dolphin - you have to configure it via Manjaro’s system configuration.

Go to System Settings → Network → Settings → Windows Shares, and enter your Username/PS.

This solved my issue. I do admit, if you have multiple SMB shares with different credentials I don’t know what you’d do. But assuming you have only one, the above works.
