ELF object binary architecture: AMD x86-64

I guess this somehow connected to the nvidia drivers update, but for now i donโ€™t want to mess with it without knowing for sure it is the real reason.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Kernel 6.17 has reached EOL.
The only viable kernels currently are:

  • Kernel 6.18 (LTS)
  • Kernel 6.12 (LTS) as a fallback

Is Remmina installed from the official repo or from AUR?

I guess not from AUR

extra/remmina 1:1.4.41-1 [installed]
Remote desktop client written in GTK+
extra/freerdp 2:3.19.1-1 [installed]
Free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Iโ€™ve updated the kernel to 6.18.2-1-MANJARO, no effect, remmina still crashes

UPDATE:
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nouveau remmina
seems to fix the issue, so the issue is definitely linked to nvidia driver installed.

Yes, that is from the official repo.

No effect on Remmina was suggested.
Switching kernels was necessary, in order to receive Support.

Possibly. Is there a problem remaining with Nouveau? Otherwise, installing Nvidia 570xx or 575xx series might be beneficial.

Apparently the 590xx series isnโ€™t expected to be much better.

See the recent Stable Update Announcement:

  • mhwd -l: List drivers available for your device.
  • mhwd -li: Show the currently installed driver.

Generally the procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the current driver:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia
  1. Install the driver preferred (e.g: the 570xx series):
sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-570xx
  • Note that sudo is required unless you are in a chroot environment, where you are already the Super User (root).
  1. Reboot.

However, there may be other considerations which (not being an Nvidia user myself) others might comment on further.

Regards.

I am sorry to hear that.

I am using remmina RDP quite often to connect to Windows machines - mostly on a daily basis and I am not able to reproduce a crash so it will be difficult to provide a meaningful answer.

Certain freerdp components has been removed from the official repo.

libpam-freerdp2 2.0.0-1 AUR
Arctica Greeter: Remote logon support for freerdp (PAM module)
krdc-xfreerdp 23.08.5-3 AUR
Remote Desktop Client(old version with xfreerdp)
freerdp2 2.11.7-5 AUR
Free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
freerdp-sdl3 1:3.19.1-1 AUR
Free implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) (SDL3 only)
freerdp-git 3.18.0.r6.g193f76e-2 AUR

You own suspicion pointing to Nvidia may be relevant.

The following is a suggestion based on several other topics related to the Nvidia driver stack and the issues that comes from it

The linux 6.17 is EOL so the following will require you to sync the latest 6.18 (which happen to be an LTS)

  1. Install the Nouveau driver (as backup)
    sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux

  2. remove the current Nvidia driver
    sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

  3. install kernel 6.18 and remove 6.17 in the process
    sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618 rmc

  4. install the nvidia 570xx driver
    sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-570xx

  5. restart your system

Well, iโ€™ve tried what you suggested.
I installed 6.18 kernel, deleted current 580 nvidia driver and installed 570xx and after reboot GUI does not start. Now with any nvidia driver, neither 575xx, nor 570xx. And now DE doesnโ€™t start even with the latest nvidia driver

These messages are confusing, because according tot Nvidia docs my GPU is definitely supported

For now iโ€™ve started DE with noveau driver. What do I do next? No nvidia driver is functional right now

Apparently now my GPU is not supported by open version of nvidia drivers, so i had to install non-open version like this
sudo pacman -S linux617-nvidia linux618-nvidia lib32-nvidia-utils nvidia-settings

Via Manjaro Settings Manager GUI somehow only open versions were installed, i didnโ€™t find a way to tick-off Open Source, so i made it via CLI

I donโ€™t know if it is the right way to resolve my initial problem, but it helps, remmina works with no issues

Except that kernel 6.17 has reached EOL (as previously indicated) so linux617-nvidia is not appropriate.

The nouveau driver is likely to work.

Please remove all packages related to linux 6.17 - it is EOL and will only cause issues at a later point.

To be able to understand what happens on your system it is important that you let us know what packages are on the system - especially those related to nvidia.

This is what is happening upstream from Arch Linux

Arch Linux announcement on NVDIA 590

NVIDIA 590 driver drops Pascal and lower support; main packages switch to Open Kernel Modules

2025-12-20 - Peter Jung

With the update to driver version 590, the NVIDIA driver no longer supports Pascal (GTX 10xx) GPUs or older. We will replace the nvidia package with nvidia-open, nvidia-dkms with nvidia-open-dkms, and nvidia-lts with nvidia-lts-open.

Impact: Updating the NVIDIA packages on systems with Pascal, Maxwell, or older cards will fail to load the driver, which may result in a broken graphical environment.

Intervention required for Pascal/older users: Users with GTX 10xx series and older cards must switch to the legacy proprietary branch to maintain support:

  • Uninstall the official nvidia, nvidia-lts, or nvidia-dkms packages.
  • Install nvidia-580xx-dkms from the AUR

Users with Turing (20xx and GTX 1650 series) and newer GPUs will automatically transition to the open kernel modules on upgrade and require no manual intervention.

โ€“ archlinux.org

A similar announcment for Manjaro has been drafted

Manjaro Linux announcement draft on NVIDIA 590

The current status of the Nvidia drivers is a mixed experience.

Some have no issues others do.

Your GPU is Nvidia 1050

Whether this card will work with 570xx, 575xx or 580xx may be a hit or a miss.

This is why I recommend using the open source nouveau driver and as you experienced remmina is now working.

I am not deep down in mhwd - because I donโ€™t use Nvidia (except for a laptop with 5070 currently at my daughters hand).

Now that I am forced to think about it - it may be that mhwd - when installing the opensource driver is blacklisting the nvidia driver and vice-versa.

If that is so - I am to blame, please accept my apology.

This means that to use one of the video-nvidia-<version>xx one need to remove the opensource driver.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux

Then install one of the versioned drivers - video-nvidia-nvidia-{570|575|580}xx.

Example installing video-nvidia-nvidia-580xx

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-nvidia-580xx

Be sure to restart the system

I canโ€™t confirm that since i didnโ€™t check it out while experimenting with drivers.
For now installed โ€œnon-freeโ€ nvidia package if working, initial issue resolved.
But i guess eventually i will be forced to use AUR dkms package.

I think i can mark this post as solved. Thank you everyone for your help.
