Recovering from an interupted update

In following the How To on this subject I have failed to make progress. The following is where it seems to fail after command: ‘update-grub’

[manjaro /]# update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found theme: /usr/share/grub/themes/manjaro/theme.txt
Warning: os-prober will be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.
ERROR: mkdir /var/lock/dmraid

grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
Adding boot menu entry for UEFI Firmware Settings ...
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+/memtest.bin

done

then:-

[manjaro /]# exit
exit
 --> umount: [/mnt/boot/efi]
 --> umount: [/mnt]
[manjaro ~]#

upon reboot my system goes to grub rescue

My system still will not boot. Any ideas anyone?

You have no kernel installed at the moment, due to the interrupted update.
Install a kernel when in chroot:

pacman -Syu linux66 (or whatever version you like)
mkinitcpio -P
update-grub

this time, the command output from the last command should have a few more lines
telling you that it found at least one kernel and the corresponding initrd

No progress.

I still get ‘grub_is_lockdown’
and
grub rescue

in chroot I get:

Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/sda2]
 --> mount: [/mnt]
 --> mount: [/mnt/boot/efi]

still in chroot I get:

[manjaro /]# mhwd-kernel -li

The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux510
   * linux515

Hi @Fastship

I understand that you have not been active in the forum for some 4 years, however, there are forum requirements in presentation that should be adhered to.

In this instance I have edited both your posts accordingly. In future, you are expected to do this yourself.

The Update Announcements should be checked frequently for important update related information.

These announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

I suspect this would be what you’re looking for:

No. I applied that ‘How To’ solution as indicated in my opening post.

:bangbang: Tip :bangbang:

When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Sed
sollicitudin dolor
eget nisl elit id
condimentum
arcu erat varius
cursus sem quis eros.

Instead of like this:

Sed sollicitudin dolor eget nisl elit id condimentum arcu erat varius cursus sem quis eros.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby increasing legibility thus making it easier for those trying to provide assistance.

For more information, please see:

As I’m a moderator on the forum, I have taken the liberty of doing this for you, this time.

Will do. Thanks for pointing that out.

While I recognise your attempt to conform, for long code or command output, a scollable preformatted text box is usually preferred; it saves others from having to scroll to Antarctica and back to find something relevant.

The </> button will create a preformatted text box. From that point, just paste the text content between the two rows of (3) backtick characters, like this:

```
[assume this is your great wall of text]
```
Regards.

That is a new one - you didn’t have this before.

From your posted command output it is clear that you now have linux66 correctly in place.

I do not know what the message:
grub_is_lockdown
means
(if I had to guess I’d think of secure boot active in UEFI settings first).

Someone else might know.

Your posted inxi information is almost unreadable as you might have noticed yourself.
Can you do the same command, but from outside chroot
when done inside chroot, the output looks horrible like this - not your fault.
Just boot and do it before you enter chroot.

Boot into a live eenvironment, enter a chroot environment and install this script:

pamac install install-grub

And afterwards, while still in the chroot environment, reinstall grub with:

install-grub

exit the chroot environment and reboot.

Where is your $ESP actually mounted;
at /boot/efi or /boot?

lsblk -o list

[manjaro /]# pamac install install-grub
Preparing...

[manjaro /]# install-grub

[manjaro /]#
[manjaro /]# lsblk -o list
lsblk: unknown column: list
sudo lsblk -o list

if outside chroot

hmmm…that is odd…

OK, from within the chroot environment, run the following and provide the output:

cat /etc/fstab

And

lsblk
