Problem with wireless headphones (the microphone works, but the audio is not heard)

Hi,

I recently bought some wireless headphones on Amazon from the BINNUNE brand, they had a good rating from users and in the product information it says that it works on Linux. I have tested them on Windows and they work fine.

In Linux, when plugging in the USB dongle, the system detects it fine (I’m using KDE). If I go to the audio configuration, I see that the system has detected it correctly, both for output to listen to audio, and for input with the microphone.

The problem is that the audio is not heard. The microphone does work correctly, I have opened Audacity, I have recorded audio speaking through the microphone of the headset, and I could see perfectly how the waves were drawing as I spoke. But as I say, nothing is heard through the headphones.

I have tried to do what is said on this page:

But it hasn’t worked for me. I’ve also tried uninstalling PulseAudio and installing PipeWire, and that didn’t work either.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this problem?

Regards.

Run alsamixer and check if your headphones are muted.

I have tried with alsamixer but on none of the devices, neither the sound card nor the headphones, it shows any mute option in the ones shown below. But one thing caught my attention, even though I have uninstalled PipeWire and reinstalled PulseAudio, when I enter the alsamixer application I get this:

I suggest you install pulseaudio-alsa to replace pipewire-alsa to ensure PulseAudio is set as default ALSA Output

Use this command to get information about ALSA audio settings in text format

  alsa-info.sh --with-amixer --stdout

In alsamixer and pulsemixer, the headphones are detected correctly, as well as in the KDE settings panel:

But as I say, the audio is not heard, it is not even heard when performing the KDE sound test in the audio settings panel.

I paste here the result of the command (the headphones are the BW02BT’/'Realtek BW02/BT):

ALSA mixer control PCM for audio playback to headphones is unmuted, but audio level is set to 0

To access alsamixer control for headphones to increase audio level:

alsamixer --card=BWO2BT

When audio is set to suitable level, save changes to ALSA settings:

sudo alsactl store BWO2BT

Thank you so much! This has worked!

But now I have another problem: if I lower the volume a bit in the KDE control panel or in PulseAudio Volume Control, the moment it goes below 100% volume, the audio stops. If I raise it again to 100% or more, it is heard, but as I say, if it goes below 100%, the sound automatically stops being heard.

Please post more information about audio devices detected in PulseAudio/PipeWire

I see that the problem is that when you go down only one unit, for example, go down from 100% to 99%, the volume of the sound is lowered as if it had been lowered to 10%, you only hear the sound a little, and when you go down to 98% can no longer hear anything. It’s as if for every unit you turn down the volume in the KDE control panel or in the PulseAudio Volume Control, it goes down by 85% or 90%, it’s completely out of proportion.

I have done the following test: I have opened alsamixer on a console while a song was playing. In the KDE control panel the volume was at 100%:

When I lower the volume in KDE to 99%, I see that in alsamixer it has been lowered to 48:

And when in KDE I lower it to 98%, in alsamixer it is lowered to 0%:

That is, for each unit of volume that is it goes down in KDE, it goes down 52% in alsamix, that’s why the problem occurs. For some reason, the volume in the KDE audio control panel and the alsamixer volume are out of sync.

Previous information from amixer shows that ‘PCM’ control is scaled using integer values 0-127. amixer also shows audio level as a percentage and in decibels

alsamixer screenshots in post #11 show a limited decibel range for the PCM control of 0.0dB to +0.5dB
Audio devices usually show 0.0dB as maximum and level can be reduced by -50.0dB or more

I suggest you install pavucontrol-qt because it shows audio levels in PulseAudio as percentage and decibel values
Check the audio level scaling in Output Devices tab for headset
I also suggest you go to Playback tab and increase/decrease audio level for one audio stream by 0.5 dB to hear how this amount of level change should work

If you want to report more information about audio levels here use terminal commands to get audio levels in text format rather than screenshots:

amixer --card=BWO2BT sget PCM
pactl get-sink-volume alsa_output.usb-Realtek_BW02_BT-00.analog-stereo

IMO the PulseAudio/ALSA level control for the wireless USB device is not fit for purpose.
I suggest you set level to 100% and use other audio controls to adjust audio levels.
Use the volume control on the headphones or adjust levels of Playback Streams in GUI controls.

I paste here the results of the commands that you have indicated before:

❯ amixer --card=BW02BT sget PCM
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 127
  Mono: Playback 127 [100%] [0.50dB] [on]
❯ pactl get-sink-volume alsa_output.usb-Realtek_BW02_BT-00.analog-stereo
Volume: front-left: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB, front-right: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB
        balance 0,00

I have tried with pavucontrol-qt (PulseAudio Volume Control) and the result is the same if the volume is lowered from the Output Devices tab, as soon as it is lowered to 98% nothing is heard anymore.

However, from the Playback tab it does work fine, you can gradually lower the volume for the application that is currently playing audio. Therefore it is a possible workaround, but it is a nuisance because I have to configure the volume for each application without being able to configure it in general for all of them using the system volume…

What is clear is that this is not working well on Linux…

The only difference expected from using pavucontrol was for the audio level to be displayed in decibels in addition to percentage values

Terminal commands show a mismatch in decibel levels PulseAudio level from pactl command is 100% / 0,00 dB but ALSA level in amixer is [100%] [0.50dB]

The only way I can think of to get a useable level control in PulseAudio is to add a virtual sink before the output sink

pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name="headset_volume" sink_properties=device.description="Headset\ Volume"

Set the virtual sink as default for audio playback

pactl set-default-sink headset_volume

And set audio level of sink for USB dongle to 100%

pactl set-sink-volume alsa_output.usb-Realtek_BW02_BT-00.analog-stereo 100%

Then use Audio GUI controls to set Headset Volume to play audio to Analog Output (BW02/BT Analog Stereo) and use Headset Volume control to adjust audio level

Sorry, but I don’t know if I’m doing it right.

I have followed the steps that you have indicated and I see that a new virtual device called Headset\Volume has been created in the PulseAudio Volume Control:

But when selecting that device in the KDE settings panel as audio output, nothing is heard:

I am the one that is wrong here
null sink module could be made to work by adding another module, but that is getting too complex for just a volume control
there are other modules that could work, but not simple to implement and maintain

I suggest you reboot system or restart PulseAudio to get rid of the null-sink module

systemctl --user restart pulseaudio

I am going to get another cup off coffee (maybe 2) and think of a simpler plan

back soon…

update: plan B (installing an equalizer) didn’t work, but I have a plan C to test

This should work without much additional GUI configuration:

pactl load-module module-remap-sink master=alsa_output.usb-Realtek_BW02_BT-00.analog-stereo channels=2 remix=no

That will create a virtual output device Remapped BW02/BT and the level control should work without changing the BW02/BT output level

If audio playback is not showing in level meters for both outputs, change the audio Playback streams to play to Remapped BW02/BT instead of BW02/BT

I am doing something wrong?

Check the sink name is correct

pactl list sinks short | cut -f1-2

Add double quotes around the sink name and omit options for channels and remix

pactl load-module module-remap-sink master="alsa_output.usb-Realtek_BW02_BT-00.analog-stereo"

OK, after executing the line that you have indicated, this is what I see now in the PulseAudio Volume Control. But modifying the volume level of the Remapped BW02/BT Analog Stereo device does not produce any change in volume, it does nothing:
