Plasma 6 fails on running different builtin applications

After recent update providing Plasma-6 different apps fail or stop working.
Crashes that been noted and constantly appear so far:

  • System monitor shuts down when clicking on any item in Application section.
  • plasmashell shows crash window (Crash handler window with prompt to report) when resuming from suspend
  • Screen-locking: after a minute or so on screen-locking the display image gets frozen and fan gets constantly noisy (intensive work) until I switch to TTY-1, then get back to TTY-2 and unlock the screen. In htop I could notice for a moment that most CPU consumption jumped between plasmashell or kwin_x11. That happens every time (since that recent update).
  • Spectacle does not work:

17.05.24 16:31 spectacle Screenshot request failed: “The process is not authorized to take a screenshot”
17.05.24 16:31 plasmashell kpipewire_logging: error: “Failed to connect to PipeWire” 0
17.05.24 16:31 plasmashell received error while creating the stream “Failed to connect to PipeWire” Media monitor will not work.
17.05.24 16:31 plasmashell kpipewire_logging: error: “Failed to connect to PipeWire” 0

I had the same problem with system monitor and I fixed it by deleting the “~/.config/systemmonitorrc” file.
Maybe the rest of your problems will be solved if you delete the appropriate configuration files.

can you boot with another kernel ?
version 6.8 or 6.6 LTS or 6.1 LTS , maybe 5.15 LTS

I’ve been on 6.6 LTS and had the same.

That one I have experienced my self.

I think I removed spectaclerc from .config

As general rule for this major change - we all had to do so - remove all plasma related configuration from - best done when looged out and switching to a TTY

  • ~/.local
  • ~/.config

finally remove .cache

Unfortunately didn’t solve it for me. After update to Plasma 6 I have the same issue as @RomanPerekhrest

Try removing the .page files from ~/.local/share/plasma-systemmonitor/.
This worked for me. I kept only the files for the custom pages that I’ve created.

Seeing something similar in another thread was related to the use of the deprecated pipewire-media-session.

Which we might have seen also if a decent inxi was used;

This seems to show you have pipewire but its disabled?

Is this intentional?

To install the metapackage you could do

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire

Which should install and enable pipewire services etc.

I’m on pulseaudio. Don’t pulseaudio and pipewire exclude each other?

rm -rf ~/.local/share/plasma* && rm -rf ~/.config/plasma* ?

Please see Applications / Manjaro Plasma Reset · GitLab

pipewire does not conflict with any PulseAudio packages
pipewire-pulse conflicts with pulseaudio and pulseaudio-bluetooth
pipewire-alsa conflicts with pulseaudio-alsa

I suggest check pipewire.socket and pipewire.service

systemctl --user -l status pipewire.socket pipewire.service

kpipewire might be failing to connect to PipeWire If the service is not running
but I don’t use KDE or PipeWire

That was one the worst resets: I’ve lost all my settings and sessions in different apps … and spectacle still does not work.
2024-06-03_14-15

Can you remove the spectacle cache?

rm -r ~/.cache/spectacle

And maybe also the spectaclerc file?

rm ~/.config/spectaclerc

(neither of these would have been included in the above script)

@cscs –
Tried just now. Same window with error.

Do you happen to have a spectacle launcher in ~/.local/share/applications ?

1 Like

I got ~/.local/share/applications/org.kde.spectacle.desktop there.

I dont know why.

We could investigate blah blah … but I say remove it or back it up by moving it somewhere else.

(the current/correct file should be provided at /usr/share/applications/org.kde.spectacle.desktop)

How does spectacle run then?

Yes, it’s working now. Why it happened to be placed in ~/.local/share/applications/ ?
