Personalisations not persisting

Hi guys!

At first I though this behavior was limited to Firefox, but after this thread I’m thinking it’s a bit (perhaps a lot) more widespread.

I think the behavior, for me at least, started after the loast I might be wrong, but that’s what I think.

Any customisation I make in Firefox, page zoom etc., will not persist after Firefox restarts, making me suspect it’s not being saved. And after the thread I mentioned above, it would seem it’s not limited to Firefox, leading me to suspect the ~./config folder’s (or /home directory, ~/.* directory) permissions are out of whack. My directories’ permissioons are below:

Any help to get this right would be much appreciated. I suspect it’s something small, however, I don’t know what it can be.

(Also, don’t worry about “failiing now” hard drive. There’s not data on it; it’s not being used. It’s ust not unpugged yet.)

Firefox does not use the ~/.config directory. It uses the ~/.mozilla directory. I would recommend checking the permissions on that directory and everything below it ─ directories and files.

Your Engrish is ferry kood. :stuck_out_tongue: :laughing:

Yersh, I knows it are I blame mistakes on a stupid motor vehicle accident that caused to have absolutely terrible hand-eye coordination, thus my typing has gone down the drain. The worst part? I read it and corrected many mistakes before publishing. :man_shrugging: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I know, and I posted that below, I don’t have a problem with checking and correcting, but for what I need to know check what and correct to what. And, sadly I don’t know what the permissions should be to rule it out or confirm it.

Well, that’s easy: they are your files, so you need read and write permission on everything.

Also true, thank you.

Unfortunately, no dice. From what I could figure, the default permissions for ~/.mozilla is 700. And it was that, but I set it anyway:

$ chmod 700 /home/mirdarthos/.mozilla
$ stat /home/mirdarthos/.mozilla

File: /home/mirdarthos/.mozilla
Size: 4096 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 directory
Device: 10302h/66306d   Inode: 5541378     Links: 7

and restarted Firefox. Unfortunately the problem continues.

What about the files under ~/.mozilla?

This may sound like a very stupid question, so please forgive me. Should they also be 700? I ask, because I don’t want to do it wrong, to restrictive a permission set isn’t right, but neither is too much freedom.

Everything under your home directory should be readable and writable to you. However, recursively applying 700 permissions would also add execute permission on files. So the safest is to do the following… :arrow_down:

cd ~
chmod -R u+r,u+w ./

Thank you very, very much. I just did it:

$ chmod -R u+r,u+w ./

[...]
chmod: changing permissions of './.oh-my-zsh/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/feature_request.md': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of './testdisk.log': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of './file': Operation not permitted

There are a lot of permissions denied for the ``.oh-my-zsh` directory, it looks like the whole directory. I’m, guessing I can ignore them?

The testdisk.log file is a leftover from when I diagnosed the faulty hard drive. One I haven’t deleted yet, so it can be ignored.

The .filefile/directory I have absolutely no knowledge of. I almost suspect it's from a failed/incorrectfind` command.

Everything in your home directory should be owned by you. :arrow_down:

sudo chown -R mirdarthos:mirdarthos /home/mirdarthos
chmod -R u+r,u+w /home/mirdarthos

Thank you. I though as much, but just double-checked. I’m no expert and don’t know it all, but I’’'m more than open to learning, Don’t know what did it then, but both commands ran sucessfully:

╭─mirdarthos@Mirdarthos-PC ~
╰─➤  sudo chown -R mirdarthos:mirdarthos /home/mirdarthos                                                                                                                                                                   1 ↵
[sudo] password for mirdarthos:
╭─mirdarthos@Mirdarthos-PC ~
╰─➤  chmod -R u+r,u+w /home/mirdarthos
╭─mirdarthos@Mirdarthos-PC ~
╰─➤

I’ll see if things are better now, thank you very much, @Aragorn!!!
