After updating with yay -Syu, which has been atleast a week I last updated, and rebooted. I am now perma stuck in the emergency state and I am confused on what to do next.
Hello,
Post your System Info’s please:
inxi --admin --verbosity=5 --filter --no-host --width
/var/log/pacman.log
Might tell us more, what’s happend.
Can you please list any messages you received - exactly as they appeared - this will likely help others to narrow it down.
Also note anything you might have done before the issue occured; for example, did you perform an update, or notice any other errors… Anything you add might help others to help you.
As mentioned, some system information may also be useful.
Regards.
Welcome to the Manjaro community
As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:
Update Announcements
The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.
System Information
While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; ![]()
Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:
inxi --filter --verbosity=8
or the short form:
inxi -zv8
- inxi man pages (Arch Manual)
Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Hi @LOLYOU, and welcome!
From what I rather quickly gather from your post is that this happened on reboot after updating, correct?
This leads me to suspect it has something to do with a missing kernel. Do you know what filesystem you use? If not BTRFS, You’ll do good to follow these instructions and enter a chroot environment, if you do use BTRFS, see below the instructions for links on how to do it.
How to chroot
-
Ensure you’ve got a relatively new ISO or at least one with a still supported LTS kernel.
-
Write/copy/
ddthe ISO to a USB thumb drive. -
When done, boot with the above mentioned USB thumb drive into the live environment.
-
Once booted, open a terminal and enter the following command to enter the
chrootenvironment:
manjaro-chroot -a
- If you have more than one Linux installation, select the correct one to use from the list provided.
When done, you should now be in the chroot environment.
But, be careful, as you’re now in an actual root environment on your computer, so any changes you make will persist after a restart.
For more:
Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new users. Please take the time to follow the given links and learn more.
Please also take note that these instructions will not work for/on a BTRFS file-system. For that, see:
From the chroot environment, please run and provide the output to:
-
inxi --filter --verbosity=8Those with privacy concerns, note that when
-z, or--filteris used, all personally identifiable information is filtered out from the resultinginxioutput.
-
mhwd-kernel --listinstalled -
pacman -Qs linux
Tip
When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:
```
pasted text
```
Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:
~~~
pasted text
~~~
This will just cause it to be rendered like this:
Sed
sollicitudin dolor
eget nisl elit id
condimentum
arcu erat varius
cursus sem quis eros.
Instead of like this:
Sed sollicitudin dolor eget nisl elit id condimentum arcu erat varius cursus sem quis eros.
Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.
Thereby increasing legibility thus making it easier for those trying to provide assistance.
For more information, please see:
As I’m a moderator on the forum, I have taken the liberty of doing this for you, this time.
![]()
Additionally
If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:
LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl
This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.
Note that the above text is partially pre-prepared as a general introduction for new forum Users. Please take the time to to understand how it is done and encourage quality responses.
Sorry for the late reply. After i boot into the live environment and typed in manjaro-chroot -a. It outputted:
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map
The same happened when I tried to do manjaro-chroot /mnt/root which is the drive that holds Manjaro.

Also, how should I send the pacman.log ?
As far as I know it’s normal. If I remember correctly mine says something similar when I chroot.
For more certainty you need to give us more than just those two lines to work with.
Pastebin or similar?
pacman log: pacman.log - Pastebin.com
- That’s not
pacman.log, that’s the same as:
- Why do you have so many mirrors configured?
You can either use
manjaro-chroot -a (the automatic method)
or
mount the partition holding the / (root) file system yourself - to /mnt, for example
and then also mount the EFI partition to the correct place under /mnt
and then
manjaro-chroot /mnt
What you described here is almost certainly wrong.
These are “normal” - can be ignored.
oh i pasted the wrong thing, can you check it again ? it should be correct this time. Also, I don’t know why there’s so many mirrors configured to be honest.
There’s also an error that was also outputted that I for some reason didn’t add
==> ERROR: No Linux partitions detected!
Also, I’m using systemd-boot as my bootloader
If that was the result after you did this:
then that may be totally normal - because your chroot was faulty
But:
we don’t have context, don’t know when you did what and how. ![]()
Ah
systemd-boot …
Then … why would you even get messages like this?:
Those can only occur if you use grub and update it’s configuration.
The process is different for systemd-boot.
You may have not done the transition from grub to systemd-boot correctly.
Grub shouldn’t even be present anymore after the transition.
That is the most likely thing that happened. There was probably some GRUB files laying around that I didnt properly delete
Deleting files is not necessarily the best approach to removing a package. There are usually better ways.

I just reinstalled so that fixed the issue.
I removed the “solution” mark.
It’s not a solution to the problem you had due to switching from grub to systemd-boot.
It just works as a fresh installation with grub as the default boot loader.
No, reinstalling doesn’t fix an issue. It just means you didn’t want to deal with it, and crossed fingers that a fresh installation might not have the same issue. In this instance, your gamble paid off. ![]()
