Pamac Gui updates acting strangely

For the last week or so, whenever I refresh the Pamac gui, it says there are never any updates available, but then as soon as I close the window, I get a notification saying there are updates available! Go back into Pamac and there they are, waiting to be installed.

I’ve tried updating the mirrors but it has made no difference.

Typing sudo pacman -Syu from the terminal always works without issue.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Which version of pamac are you using? I’ve heard of issues where people are still using the GTK3 version.

pacman -Qi pamac

In any case, I recommend using pacman, regardless. (as do some others on here).

I tend to avoid using GUI tools for updates, installations etc. to avoid issues such as these.

Thanks for the reply. It says: 10.7.0-1

Seems that is out of date. Here’s mine:

Pamac version etc.

sudo pacman -Syu pamac

That’s interesting. How do I install that version?

I just updated my post above, with the command.

For completeness, please specify your

  • Desktop environment
  • Manjaro channel: stable, testing, or unstable
  • pamac-gtk or pamac-gtk3

I tried that but it just came up with ‘warning: pamac-gtk3-10.7.0-1 is up to date – reinstalling’

sudo pacman -Syu pamac-gtk

should work, give it a go. You might need to remove your existing version, though?

OK, I’ve now managed to installed 11.7.2-1. I guess I should just see how that goes. I’m running Cinnamon on unstable, btw.

It’s always best to provide some system info up front, as this helps us to help you, e.g.:

inxi -zv8

… as then we know what system and desktop environment, etc., we are dealing with.

Yeah, sorry, I should have mentioned I was running Cinnamon. I’m guessing this is why it has been stuck on the gtk3 version.

Pamac is buggy. Happens to me sometimes. Or the opposite, does not clean the icon after update. Usually hitting the refresh button in the middle helps. Sometimes 2 times. Sometimes a refresh database from menu works.
It is just how it is and i doubt it is version dependent too much, since i use the gtk4 version. But can always try that too if you want, it will just not match your theme. But do this change from pacman in the terminal.

sudo pacman -Syu pamac-gtk

Will offer to delete pamac-gtk3. And you can reverse the same way, sudo pacman -S pamac-gtk3

I know there are KDE users who hate pamac, but not heard similar from Cinnamon users

I’m not sure about hate, but at least in my case, I prefer not to use GUI tools for updating or installing software, regardless of DE or OS. I do like having the notifier though (in my case, Octopi).

I do use pamac CLI but just for package searches etc. (usually for Forum posts) and for occasionally dealing with AUR stuff. For the rest: Pacman all the way.

You are using a different package manager GUI and DE to OP

So best to suggest users avoid it rather than reporting issues to Manjaro Team?

Gnome should work OK with pamac-gtk, but other Gtk (and QT) DEs have had theme issues when using Gtk 4 version of pamac, so Manjaro still provides pamac-gtk3

I suggest using

pamac checkupdates --aur

True, but it might benefit the OP to try these, as it’s reversible.

OP post states pamac GUI is acting strangely, but no data about packages waiting to be installed
Responses allege pamac is known to buggy, but no back-links for known problem
Not much factual content here for other users to make an informed choice

OP has replaced pamac-gtk3 with pamac-gtk so it is no longer possible to get debug data for Manjaro maintainers to consider alleged strangeness

Post #10 marked as solution for OP

Wouldn’t it have been better to let the OP decide that, assuming the version change actually works?

OP had an up-to-date package manager

But has since replaced pamac-gtk3 with pamac-gtk. So not possible to troubleshoot original allegation about un-named packages
