OS won't boot after installing a new Motherboard

When I start the PC now, i get these errors:

error: no server is specified.
error: no suitable video mode found.
error: symbol ‘grub_efi_set_variable_to_string’ not found.

I have already timeshifted to before I installed the last system update, so I’m sure it’s an issue with the motherboard.
Any help is appreciated ^^

Insufficient information.

What did change?
Just the mainboard?

Is the BIOS/UEFI of the new one set up the same as the old one?
(Bios vs UEFI or CSM)

Does the very same disk (HDD or NVME or other SSD) still boot on the old, but not on the new?

Are you booting from the same disk as before?

Different graphics hardware on the new vs old?

What does that mean?
That you are trying to boot a system of which you assume, but don’t know, that it works?

Are those efiberrors or grub errors?

Well it should either be the uefi and variables, or the integrated video. Check the uefi settings (the prerequisites for running manjaro -uefi,no csm,no raid, acpi,no secure boot),check the boot order and menu. Reinstalling grub will also update the variables.
On the other hand if it is the video, you can check mkinit hooks and boot line - insert or remove kms hook, remove plymouth. Regenerate mkinit, update grub.

That will be the troubleshooting algorithm, say if you need help with a particular step.

Yes, only the mainboard changed. It’s actually the same one as before, because my old one broke.

I am booting from the same disk and the graphics hardware is the same.

Two days ago, I updated my System, which I initially assumed to have potentially caused the issue, which is why i loaded a Timeshift backup, which didn’t help.

lets have the talk

  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --verbosity=8 --filter
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

check BIOS/UEFI firmware settings … they should match what was there before
or
the new board is as broken as the old one … :man_shrugging:

That is all that can be deduced from the info provided.

Can you boot from USB? A Manjaro ISO - or any other Linux live system?

I am struggling to actually reinstall grub. I have tried to, but when I run grub-install through chroot it says: ‘grub-install: error: cannot find the EFI directory.’
I have looked up solutions for this, but they didn’t work.

I will add my inxi output soon, to see if that helps.

I am in a live USB right now, and I’ve already adjusted the UEFI firmware settings as far as I can tell.

I have attached my inxi output to the post now, so maybe that helps?

The inxi is not from chroot. Which might explain why you cannot reinstall grub - EFI partition is not mounted.
I think there was a guide somewhere in the forum how to chroot btrfs, i do not use that filesystem.

I have found an online solution to install grub that worked, but now it just goes into grub rescue mode with
error: symbol 'grub_cli_set_auth_needed' not found.

Also, here is an inxi from inside the actual chroot

Seems not limited to Manjaro;

Whatever the cause, the mainboard likely isn’t part of it.

can you from USB iso live manjaro ,
use UEFI detect > select your disk

then open a terminal

sudo mount -a
sudo lsblk -fs

check at this point that /boot/efi is your disk , not usb live iso
if ok retry for grub-install

after reboot go in UEFI motherboard and select your disk ( it should be manjaro )

This may or may not have anything to do with your boot problem but it looks like your memory module is mounted in the wrong DIMM slot. If you look at your motherboard manual, you will see a diagram of where the first DIMM should be installed.
