If you do not have video-vesa installed, then drop the video-nvidia-390xx and install (trough mhwd) the video-nvidia driver.
In short, you will have to:
sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-390xx
sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia
