Symptom: an endless spin within the Octopi window (screenshot disallowed).
Updating and restarting the system has not worked around the problem. Removing then installing Octopi has not worked around the problem.
How might I resolve it?
If I recall correctly: prior to the system update, Octopi failed repeatedly to check for updates (the button below the File menu).
I might have forced a quit of the application, but not during an installation.
Pamac works.

I would try to deinstall it and remove the settings in home folder by
sudo pacman -Rsn octopi
sudo rm /home/$USER/.config/octopi/*
Also, check if you find any file or folder of Octopi in your cache folder /home/$USER/.cache, then delete this as well.
Finally, clean your pacman cache and try to reinstall:
sudo pacman -Sc
sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyu octopiThanks.
I forced a quit of the application then followed the steps above but still, no go.

I ran lsof -c octopi, forced another quit, removed two temporary files (the first of which was explicitly a lockfile, the second was a stream), reopened Octopi, no better.
Re-ran lsof -c octopi, forced another quit, removed two more recent temporary files from the same path:
[momh167-gjp4-virtualbox-manjaro ~]# rm /tmp/qtsingleapp-Octopi-1d88-3e8-lockfile
[momh167-gjp4-virtualbox-manjaro ~]# rm /tmp/qtsingleapp-Octopi-1d88-3e8
– then restarted the OS.
Success!
Thinking back to the original symptoms … the VirtualBox guest in which I run Manjaro was unused for maybe a few weeks. Expecting updates to be applicable, I vaguely recall being surprised by the absence of the icon for octopi-notifier … then manually starting Octopi and running a check for updates. It responded but gave an unexpected response (I can’t recall what, exactly) … that’s probably when I first forced a quit. I was warned against doing so but I proceeded, thinking that no harm would come.
In retrospect, I should have thought of lock files before anything else.
