NVIDIA drivers not loading yet appear as installed in asus laptop

sorry my mistake I have just checked my notebook

Please post the output of

cat /etc/modprobe.d/mhwd-gpu.conf
cat /etc/modprobe.d/supergfxd.conf
cat /etc/modules-load.d/mhwd-gpu.conf

Hi, I have made some “progress”.

I tried to go back to the previous kernel 6.8-MANJARO, and I reinstalled the video driver trough mhwd -a. However, that caused me to boot into a black screen that allowed to use TTY and check that, yes indeed, DRIVERS WERE INSTALLED! Meaning that inxi showed drivers: nvidia and I could run nvidia-smi.

Unfortunately, while trying to get video output (startplasma, startx and sddm.service were giriving me errors) I ended up making the problem worse: at this point I get a black screen at startup and I can’t even get into TTY on all these kernels: 6.9-MANJARO and 6.8-MANJARO.

So now I can only boot TTY from the g14 kernel, where I habe begun the whole journey, and where inxi says driver: N/A and nvidia-smi is not working.

As for your commands (sorry I cant copypaste from tty)
mhwd-gpu.conf is:
blacklist nouveau,
blacklist ttm
blacklist drm_kms_helper
blacklist drm

supergfxd.conf is:
blacklist nouveau
alias nouveau off
options nvidia-drm modeset=1

The /etc/modules-load.d/mhwd-gpu.conf is:
nvidia
nvidia-drm

EDIT: the output of systemctl status sddm.service says Failed to read display number from pipe

I have regained graphics on g14 by running nvidia-xconfig and then startx.

Then, i loaded 6.8-MANJARO (where I previously could read the drivers as installed), and surprisingly I was able to get into tty (pheraps because I ran nvidia-xconfig from the g14 kernel?). So I ran nvidia-xconfig in the 6.8-MANJARO, then I ran startx and it hanged at “loading cofig files”. So, I rebooted and loaded into 6.8-MANJARO, getting again the black screen without tyy.

Then, I rebooted into g14 and I could only get tty again.

In summary, in g14 i can get graphics but not the nvidia drivers, in 6.8-MANJARO i can get only tty but with nvidia drivers working.

On a side note: my pc is now taking forever to shutdown, and I have been forcing it shut from the power button as Ive waited for over 5 minutes once.

Sorry, the names were all lowrcase in the computer’s files. My phone added the uppercase when writing in the forum.

You definitely should not have this and it would likely break other gfx drivers.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-vesa

I would also probably remove the others besides the prime one and then force reinstall the prime profile.

I dont know why you would have all of them.
But it would not be the first time I saw a user believe it was a good idea to install anything they found in mhwd.
In the future dont do that.

Even once everything is working correctly I would not expect this to function as written.
You have a hybrid system using PRIME.
(or will when the wrong drivers are removed and everything is fixed)
In order for the nvidia card to be used you would need to call it with prime-run

glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'

So

prime-run nvidia-smi

PS.

This is not an advisable way to provide system information.
It has not hidden personal information and has not provided a lot of good info like the running kernel.
Please use inxi -Farz.
In fact I am going to edit your output for now so certain text is no longer visible.

Hi, thank you very much for your help. I did as you said (removed video-vesa and reinstalled video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime. Here are some outputs from the current instance (6.9.0-arch1-1.2-g14)

Thank you for the tip con inxi. Also, the pc is now shutting down quickly again.

This probably means something or other has not happened correctly.

Please do;

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

Please show the output of that last command.

EDIT.

Oh. I notice your kernel is some custom thing.
Please use a supported kernel.
mhwd will have tried to give you ,ex, linux66-nvidia … but such a package will not exist for another third party kernel.

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux  ✔

What does it mean my kernel is a custom thing?

You are not using a supported manjaro kernel.
Please make sure to have, ex, 6.6 LTS installed.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux66

And boot into it.
You can select different kernels from Grub.
Grub being the boot loader that happens after BIOS but before login.

PS.

This is why this failed. But we can also skip this part, if only for now.
The kernel is the reason you dont have nvidia modules.

PPS.

Looking … it appears that the kernel you are currently using is linux-g14 from the AUR.
I know nothing about this kernel. But it will not work with mhwd profiles.

Well, I installed manjaro through the official iso and did nothing myself to modify the kernels. Initially I noticed the -g14 but being a newbie and coming from debian I tought it was an arch thing. However, if you look at my preovius posts, I tried installing the drivers on /boot/vmlinuz-6.8-x86_64, and I ended up getting a black screen. I will try now /boot/vmlinuz-6.9-x86_64 because downloading the 6.6 LTS will take a huge time with my connection.

Looking … it appears that the kernel you are currently using is linux-g14 from the AUR.
I know nothing about this kernel. But it will not work with mhwd profiles.

But why is it here then? Might it have soemthing to do with asus?

The ISO would not contain any AUR packages nor ‘upgrade’ to them by default.

In certain circumstances if the AUR is enabled in pamac then packages from the AUR may be pulled in as dependencies and even replace core packages - but I find it difficult to imagine a scenario where this would happen with a niche kernel series.

Only you would know.
Or the logs I suppose;

grep -i g14 /var/log/pacman.log

(pamac still writes to pacmans log)

So i booted into 6.9-MANJARO and I could getonly TTY, reinstalled the nvidia drivers just in case, and then just like in the 6.8-MANJARO the driver show as loaded in inxi and nvidia-smi runs.

However even after rebooting I still only can get into tty. if I run startx it says:

Unable connect to X server: connection refused

I was wondering if I should run nvidia-xconfig somewhere sometime?

So at least we have assured that it is only g14 that does not load modules, the other two kernels work fine.

So on the 20th of May it was installed.
Why I do not know.

Yes, as expected you never had the nvidia modules.
Though I dont know exactly what you mean by ‘install nvidia’ - hopefully it was to use mhwd again.
If you dont have a reason for the g14 kernel then please remove it.
When you have removed the kernel and booted into a supported one then please perform the

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

We would like to see the output from this.

Probably not. You should not be booting into using the nvidia … so you would not want to make nvidia-specific xorg configurations that apply generally.

Or if you do … then pay attention and make sure it is applied only to the nvidia - maybe making use of something like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf - which you likely already have some version of.

So, I booted into TTY of 6.9-MANJARO, where nvidia divers were installed and loaded and everything (but the acreen is black and the system only usable with tty). I ran startx and it gave me the error that I posted before. So I ran nvidia-xconfig, and then i ran startx again which hanged my system. I am looking at the xorg log file but I’m on tty and I don’t know how to get that text copied here on my phone.

I will definitepy remove g14. Yes I have an nvidida.conf. also every time i installed or removed video drivers was via mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 or mhwd -r etc.

If I recall there were issues with the 6.9 kernel and nvidia.

Make sure to check other kernels. Right now the latest Long Term Support kernel is 6.6.

But you may also want to make sure to do the KMS and DRM-KMS steps like here:

Just to add, news: i tried rebooting into 6.9-manjaro after i forced it shut because startx freezed the system, and now I get a purely black screen without even tty.

If I remember correctly from a couple of days ago when this happened already, now on order to fix it I have to run nvidia-xconfig from g14, and then maybe again on 6.9-manjaro and then I should be able to get the desktop back in g14.

I could try the lts kernel, tomorrow. However notice in my previous answers that I also tried the 6.8-manjaro kernel getting the same stuff as the 6.9-manjaro kernel (only tty or black screen without tty, drivers appearingly installed and working).

Do you suggest me to do some kind of driver/confif/xorg purge of data before retrying in lts kernel?

So remember when 6.9_MANJARO was showing a black screen at boot not even allowing me to run TTY? I hypotised that KDE was actually starting correctly, but it was starting on the dGPU card while my monitor, powered by the intel card, was black because it had nothing to show.

I confirmed this by forcing the “ultimate” dGPU-mode BIOS-wide. And as I suspected, 6.9-MANJARO showed my KDE desktop. I tried playing around creating corg config file via the nbidia-xsettings or the nvidia-settings gui but i still can’t see manjaro in hybrid mode.
